For the first time since 2017, the San Antonio Spurs open their first week with a hot start, taking a 4-0 record four games into the 2025-2026 season. However, some analysts think the Spurs were just lucky, but the truth may be far from just Victor Wembanyama and co. going on a streaky fluke.
Spurs Surprisingly Still Undefeated
The Silver and Black are yet to lose a game this season. They went 5-0 in the preseason and have currently won four straight in the regular season.
Nobody expected San Antonio to kick off their campaign like this, especially how scary they look when meshed perfectly as a team. Despite De’Aaron Fox’s absence due to injuries, the Spurs are looking like borderline playoff contenders, at least for now.
One game-changing factor this young squad capitalizes on is how excellent they adjust to their opponent’s defense while also dominating on the other end.
On Tuesday, the Spurs destroyed the Toronto Raptors in a blowout win, 121-103, behind Wembanyama’s 24 points and 15 rebounds, while reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle was also punishing his defenders and chipped in 22 points, 4 assists, and 5 rebounds. Meanwhile, veteran forward Harrison Barnes sneaked in with 18 points of his own, while 2025 second overall pick Dylan Harper is looking like a RoY and 6th MoY candidate with an efficient 11 points, 6 dimes, and 6 boards.
This victory is just one of the evidence of how great they work together on offense and defense. They don’t have to rely too much on Wemby, and even with the French sensation not putting up ridiculous numbers night in and night out, they can still count on the other guys on the floor, like Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Julian Champagnie, and Jordan McLaughlin, proving just how deep the Spurs are this season.
Wembanyama Breaking Record After Record
The stat sheet shows that Wembanyama is currently leading the Spurs in points, rebounds, and blocks. As the 7-foot-5 sensation is primed to be the next face of the league and a future MVP, there’s nothing he’s done so far that diverts him from that path.
As early as now, Wemby is already breaking NBA records and making history. Through four games, he’s already averaging 31.8 points, 13.8 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks per game on 60% field goal. It does look like video game numbers, but if you look closely at how he impacts his team on the defensive end, it looks like the Spurs’ playoff hopes may come sooner than expected.
In the game against the Pelicans, Wembanyama just became the first NBA player to reach 100 points and 15 blocks in his first three games, putting him in an elite class of his own.
They will next face the Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, and the Los Angeles Lakers, but their biggest challenge will come on November 8th, as they face Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun, and the Houston Rockets.
