Spurs and NBA fans were stunned after learning that rising star Victor Wembanyama will be out for the rest of the 2024-2025 season after being diagnosed with a blood clot.

Right after being named to his first All-Star game, the San Antonio Spurs’ medical team discovered a blood clot on Wemby’s right shoulder. Later on, doctor’s concluded it was indeed a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

As a result, the French stud must undergo further treatment, which means he has to be on the sidelines moving forward. Wembanyama’s season is now cut short after averaging a terrific 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game while leading the Spurs to a 23-29 win-loss record in a stacked Western Conference.

Not only will Wembanyama’s injury jeopardize the team’s aspirations this season, this is also a stark event that could alter the Spurs’ trajectory. They struggle with Wemby on the court and they’ll struggle even more without him.

Although it’s an unfortunate thing for an All-NBA caliber player, this could also boost the Spurs’ chances of landing a top-10 pick in the 2025 NBA draft. Perhaps, Cooper Flagg in a silver and black jersey? Who says no?

Will Wembanyama Still be Able to Play Again?

Fortunately, Deep Vein Thrombosis is very treatable. In fact, there are already countless different forms of cure for this type of condition.

It’s also fortunate that the DVT on Wembanyama’s right shoulder was detected as early as now because if it wasn’t, the blood clot could result in far worse complications may be the onset indication of more severe cases like Pulmonary Embolism (PE), which is deemed as fatal.

In some cases, an untreated DVT may also result in physical disabilities. These may not be deadly, but they’ll deeply affect someone like Wembanyama who relies on his physical attributes to continue playing basketball.

As for his return, he’s still expected to undergo non-stop treatment for a few months. That being said, he’s likely to return to the court early next season.
