The upcoming PBA Commissioner’s Cup promises plenty of storylines as teams gear up for another grind in one of the league’s most competitive conferences. With reinforcements coming in and rotations shifting, several players could play pivotal roles in determining whether their teams contend for a title or fall behind in the standings.
From established stars looking to build on strong campaigns to emerging talents hoping to make a leap, every team has a player worth watching as the new conference unfolds. Here is one player to keep an eye on for each squad heading into the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
San Miguel Beermen: Cjay Perez
Perez went on a tear to end the PBA Philippine Cup, delivering a historic closeout of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the semifinals before helping the Beermen win the title. Clearly, The Predator is playing some of the best basketball of his career, and he’ll be looking for an encore.
TNT Tropang 5G: Rey Nambatac
After winning PBA Finals MVP in the last Commissioner’s Cup, Nambatac has been uneven, largely due to injury. But he showed flashes in the last conference, including renewed marksmanship from four-point territory. A fully healthy Nambatac would be huge for TNT.
Barangay Ginebra San Miguel: RJ Abarrientos
Abarrientos seems to be winning over Tim Cone, resulting in a longer leash and more room to operate. He responded by averaging 17.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.4 steals in the PBA Philippine Cup before being shackled by Chris Ross in the semis. A big bounce-back in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup could be in store.
Meralco Bolts: CJ Cansino
Cansino emerged as the undisputed breakout star of the PBA Philippine Cup, putting up career highs of 18.6 points and 4.7 rebounds while displaying better defense and court awareness. He even showed he can rise to the occasion in the playoffs with a superb Game 5 against TNT. It was a star-making type of effort that could propel him—and Meralco—this conference.
Converge FiberXers: Calvin Abueva
Abueva put up monster numbers—23.6 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.8 steals, 1.2 blocks—last conference as the main man of the Titan Ultra Giant Risers. Now, with more talent around him at Converge, The Beast will be asked to carry less of a load and be a fill-in-the-gap type of player. How well he can do so could determine whether the FiberXers reach their potential.
Rain or Shine Elasto Painters: Adrian Nocum
The Elasto Painters may be the kind of team that shares the wealth, but there’s no question it’s Nocum’s squad now. He’s become a star, but if Rain or Shine is to take the leap, its Tondo-born slasher will need to give more than the 14.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists he produced last conference.
Magnolia Hotshots: Yukien Andrada
Andrada arrived only later in the PBA Philippine Cup, but that didn’t keep him from making a great first impression: 12.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in two crucial outings against TNT. The rookie can play, he’s got guts, and he’s not afraid to take shots. He could be an X-factor for a Magnolia squad that lost steam last conference after a good start.
NLEX Road Warriors: Brandon Ramirez
Ramirez might be only a role player, but he has a big role to play in NLEX—especially in a conference with towering reinforcements. The big man seems ready for it, looking slimmed down and more mobile during the RSJ Game of the PBA All-Star Weekend. As the Road Warriors’ main big, Ramirez will have to be at his best in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Phoenix Fuel Masters: Kai Ballungay
There’s no denying Ballungay’s potential. But that potential hasn’t quite translated to production, as his 11.3 points and 7.1 rebounds are relatively modest for a hyper-athletic 6-foot-7 wing who can play multiple positions. New coach Charles Tiu, who turned 6-foot-5 Will Gozum and 6-foot-6 Allen Liwag into stars in the NCAA, could be the one to unlock the former Ateneo Blue Eagle.
Titan Ultra Giant Risers: Joshua Munzon
With Abueva now at Converge, Titan Ultra is all the more Munzon’s team. Productivity isn’t the issue here, as Munzon put up 21.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.8 steals in the PBA Philippine Cup. But his shot selection and decision-making are shaky at times, and he’ll have to improve on those as the unquestioned leader of the Giant Risers beginning in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Blackwater Bossing: Sedrick Barefield
Barefield has always put up gaudy numbers, as he did in the Philippine Cup where he averaged 19.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. But his shot selection has been questionable at times, and his singular brilliance hasn’t really translated into wins. He gets another chance to prove he’s an A-1 in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Terrafirma Dyip: Maverick Ahanmisi
A few years ago, Maverick was one of the better guards in the league. With a conference under his belt and more time to acclimatize to his new team, the veteran could be primed for a resurgence. With brother Jerrick blossoming into a star, an Ahanmisi backcourt could be the tonic Terrafirma needs to win more games in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Macau Black Bears
Mitchell is no stranger to Filipino basketball fans as he had two productive stints in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup already. It’s no surprise then that the Black Bears will start out with Mitchell, who may be 33 already but is still athletic and intense. His experience could prove invaluable to help Macau adjust to the Philippine brand of ball.
