This holiday season in the Philippines, basketball is more than just a game in many households. It becomes a means of connection, strengthens family bonds, and creates quality time for every family member during the most wonderful time of the year.
Talking with Family Relatives ➡️ “Basketball Podcast”
It’s no surprise that the majority of Filipinos out there become shy when interacting with some of their cousins, uncles, and other family relatives this Christmas and New Year.
So, how does one overcome the fear of starting a conversation? Start talking about basketball.
Whether it’s about discussing who’s the greatest of all time (GOAT), which era of basketball is the best, and even why their favorite basketball squad is currently struggling, much like the Golden State Warriors right now.
Whatever the basketball topic may be, one thing is for sure: the noise in the household can sound like a basketball podcast is being recorded due to the amount of reasoning being told, people defending their answers, and just pure passion can be heard about the sport.
Age gap can become a huge factor in why some family members don’t get along with each other, but because of the sport of basketball, Pinoy’s have found a way to ignite a conversation with the people they are not very close with.
Exchange Gift for Basketball Afficionados
Another reason why even at the holidays basketball is very important is that whenever there is an “exchange gift session”, you can very much expect that some people would want to receive basketball-related items.
Oftentimes, this also happens during the Christmas Parties at work, whether it’s corporate, government, private, or wherever it may be.
You can see jerseys, shorts, t-shirts, Fanko Pops, or whatever basketball apparel inside of every Christmas present given to those addicted to the sport.
Besides, a lot of us don’t really know what the person wants. Most people just assume that every Filipino male is a fan of basketball, so it’s better to give them something related to the sport as a gift.
2 Different Ways of Playing Basketball
The majority of the Gen Z or newer generation are fond of playing basketball. It’s just not the one you’d imagine immediately.
So when a young relative tells you they like to play basketball, kindly ask first whether they play it the way Dr. James Naismith originally intended—or through a PlayStation, Xbox, or even a Nintendo Switch.
But regardless of their method, the majority of us know how to play basketball both traditionally and digitally.
The Good Old Viewing Method
And to end this story on the importance of basketball during the holiday season, almost every Filipino household tunes in to watch basketball games on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Whether they are watching via Smart Television, Laptops, Tablets, etc., one can definitely visualize that when some relatives are feasting at the Noche Buena or at the Media Noche, they are all watching the games from the PBA or NBA.
And once they are sitting and watching how beautiful the sport is, let this be a reminder for us to be thankful and grateful for all the blessings we have received this year.
Here at Rebanse, we all wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
