For the third time this season, the San Antonio Spurs blew out the Dallas Mavericks, 138-125, to notch their sixth win in the last eight games.
Spurs guard Stephon Castle made headlines in the Spurs’ blowout win on Sunday, delivering a monstrous triple-double of 40 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists to lead San Antonio to its fourth straight win.
“Having a game like this, it’s definitely a dream come true. It just felt good to be out there feeling comfortable with every shot I took and seeing them go in,” Castle said postgame.
History for Stephon Castle
At 21 years old, Stephon Castle’s triple-double made him the youngest player in NBA history to record a 40-12-12 game, with the previous record holder being Oscar Robertson, who was 22 years old at the time.
Moreover, the sophomore guard also notched this feat in only 31 minutes of action, which is good for the second-fewest minutes played in a 40-point triple-double. James Harden, then still playing for the Houston Rockets, still owns the record after he recorded a 43-10-12 game in only 29 minutes against the Cleveland Cavaliers back in 2019.
With the win, the Spurs now boast a 36-16 record and have solidified the second seed in the West. The 36 wins are the most for San Antonio before the All-Star break since the 2016-17 NBA season.
Spurs Contain Cooper Flagg
After scoring 30 or more points in his last four outings, the Mavs’ Cooper Flagg was finally brought back down to earth as the Spurs limited him to just 14 points. Flagg also finished with an atrocious minus-31 for the entire game, his worst of the season so far.
This game also marked the Mavs’ debut of newcomers Marvin Bagley III and Tyus Jones, who were acquired in trades with the Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets. They scored 16 points and 4 points, respectively.
The Mavs, who are now on a seven-game losing streak, will look to return to the win column when they face the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, while the Spurs await a matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers on the same day.
