The Los Angeles Lakers have elevated their play recently, stacking three consecutive victories while showcasing a more cohesive brand of basketball. Central to this improvement is DeAndre Ayton. The former No. 1 draft pick and seven-year veteran was the Lakers’ most significant offseason acquisition, brought in to be the Lakers’ main man on the paint, replacing the All-star Anthony Davis. Despite some inconsistencies at the start season, Ayton is starting to find his rhythm and is finally unleashing the DominAyton.
LAKERS ARE UNDEFEATED IF HE SCORES 20+ POINTS
In their last three wins, he was a force, posting three consecutive 20-point, 10-rebound performances. He’s now reached the 20-point mark six times this season with the Lakers perfect at 6-0 in those games and 7-0 whenever he records a double-double. His offensive efficiency has been the game-changer, averaging nearly 10 made baskets on just 12 attempts and he’s now shooting a career-best 69.9% from two-point range this season.
HE LEADS THE LAKERS IN DEFENSIVE RATING
Ayton’s defensive reputation hasn’t been the best but he’s taken a big step forward, showing far more effort and impact this season. In fact, Ayton tied Marcus Smart for the team-best in defensive rating at 114.4 (min. of 10 games) per Statmuse. His impact was especially evident in their win over the Pelicans, where he finished with a team-best +35. Against the Jazz, he led all players in both offensive and defensive rebounds and versus the Bucks, he held his own against Giannis, who’s playing at an MVP level this season.
If Ayton sustains this performance — with Luka and Reaves playing at an elite level and James powering his way back into form — the Los Angeles Lakers are starting to look more dangerous than ever.
