In his first three seasons for the New Orleans Pelicans, Trey Murphy III was mainly known as a long, rangy, and active defender. But he kept showing signs of a good offensive player—a three here and there, a great drive from time to time, and some playmaking artistry every once in a while.

Even so, it was Murphy’s defense that excited the Pelicans and their fanbase. There was no question he had the tools to be elite. The question was whether Murphy’s offense would catch up to his defense.
The young win has answered that question with an emphatic yes this season, improving his scoring from 14.8 points last season to 22.6 through his first 50 games in this 2024–25 NBA season. Even more impressive, everything else—rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks—has gotten better.
In other words, Murphy is taking the leap this season. Through 50, he is averaging 22.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.8 block, which are all career highs. The shooting numbers—47.5% overall, 38.3% from downtown, and 89.4 from the free throw line are also encouraging, indicating a wing with exceptional 3-D ability.
With the Pelicans ravaged by injuries, Murphy’s ascent to stardom could not have come at a better time. And it looks like he’s just getting started.
