During the first day of UAAP Season 87 3×3 Basketball last April 28, the Adamson Soaring Falcons and N.U. Bulldogs had an unblemished record in the Men’s tournament.
While the UST Growling Tigresses, FEU Lady Tamaraws, and UP Fighting Maroons also remained perfect in the Women’s division with 2 wins and 0 losses.
Men’s: Falcons and Bulldogs Mean Business
Seeking their third title in a row, the De La Salle Green Archers faced a hungry and wary N.U. Bulldogs, which gave them their first loss of the tournament.
Led by Steve Nash Enriquez, N.U. started the tournament with a 21 to 12 victory against the defending champs.
Their second game was against the U.P. Fighting Maroons, and it was Jolo Manansala’s time to shine as he helped his school pick up the early 2-0 record as he finished with 8 points, 2 steals, and shot 83% from the field (5 out of 6). The final score was 21 to 15.
Meanwhile, for AdU, they also met UP and came out victorious. Allen Torres led his school with 11 points, 3 assists, 3/6 from 2-pointers, and a perfect 1 point. Ending the game with 72% field goal shooting in a 21 to 14 win.
Coincidentally, the Falcons also gave the 3-peat seeking Green Archers a loss. Though this game was much closer from start to finish. All of the players from both universities stepped up.
Ultimately, Allen Torres yet again carried his squad as Cedrick Manzano also contributed a lot to get their second win of the tournament. Torres had 8 points, 2 assists, and was perfect in the 1-point area (3 of 3) while Manzano had 6 points, 3 assists, 1 steal, 8 rebounds, and a surprising 4 blocks.

Women’s: Tigresses, Tamaraws, and Fighting Maroons Show Resilience
Fresh from their WMPBL stint, Kent Pastrana showed no mercy against the U.E. Lady Warriors with their 21 – 5 victory for their debut game in this tournament. She finished 10 points and was 66% from the field. While CJ Maglupay was all around as she recorded 6 points, 3 blocks, and 8 rebounds.
For the first game of FEU Lady Tamaraws, Shane Salvani showed everyone that she’s the star of her team as she finished with 13 points, 6 rebounds, while shooting 46% from the field. The Ateneo Blue Eagles couldn’t do anything to stop this rampage as they fell with the final score of 21 – 9.
UP’s games are the complete opposite of the two teams, as they had to go to overtime against Adamson in order to claim the win. Thanks to the late game heroics of Louna Ozar, as her 2 points gave them the hard-earned 15 to 13 victory. She also recorded 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
The second game of the Lady Tamaraws also faced a tough battle against the Lady Warriors. It took the combined efforts of Yvette Villanueva and EJ Lopez, as each scored 7 points to make their team 2 – 0 after Day 1 of eliminations in the 20 – 17 victory.
A crucial layup made by Christie Bariquit saved the day for the Fighting Maroons against the Lady Bulldogs in a 17-16 win. Bariquit also had 11 boards and a steal to help UP stay unbeaten 2 games to none.
To end their Day 1, UST faced Ateneo but the Blue Eagles did put up a respectable fight. However, Pastrana provead she learned a lot in her team’s previous WMPBL campaign as she once again leads her team to a 21 to 15 win. She finished with a game high 11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals as the Growling Tigresses are the last team to be undefeated.
