UAAP Season 87 Men’s Volleyball BY THE NUMBERS: FEU Continues Unbeaten Record in Second-round Opener

The Far Eastern University Tamaraws continued their unbeaten round in the ongoing UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament at the second-round opener weekend.

The Tamaraws are still on top of the standing with a perfect 8-0 win-loss record, closely followed by the defending champions, National University Bulldogs, with a 6-2 card. The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles and De La Salle University Green Spikers are tied in the third and fourth spot with an identical 5-3 record.

Last year’s finalists, the University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers, hold the solo fifth spot with a 4-4 record, while the Adamson University Soaring Falcons and University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons are tied at the sixth and seventh spot with 2-6 record. The University of the East Red Warriors are still at the bottom of the standing with eight losses.

Here are the other things you missed on the sixth weekend of the UAAP Volleyball Tournament.

The Far Eastern University Tamaraws only needed an hour and 25 minutes to continue their unbeaten record at the expense of the University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers, 26-24, 25-23, 25-19, on Sunday, March 23.

Mikko Espartero led the Tamaraws with 18 points on 17 attacks and one block while Zhydryx Saavedra added 15 points on 13 attacks and two aces. Josh Ybañez scored team-high 15 points for the Golden Spikers while Jay Rack de la Noche added 12.

Because of the win, the Tamaraws still stand on top of the standings with an 8-0 win-loss record, while the Golden Spikers dropped to the fifth spot with a 4-4 card. Despite their unbeaten run, Tamaraws head coach Eddieson Orcullo reminded his boys to continue winning.

He said, “Huwag lang dapat kami makuntento tsaka mag-relax. ‘Yung mga nangyari sa sets, especially sa first and second sets, dapat hanggang hindi natatapos ‘yung match or ‘yung set, hindi dapat kami tumigil. May momentum na minsan pero hindi pa nagwi-whistle ‘yung referee pero tumitigil na kami sa paggalaw. Medyo linisin pa dapat namin ‘yun at iba pang mga bagay-bagay.”

The Far Eastern University will face the University of the East on Wednesday, March 26, at 3 pm at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan. Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas will try to end their losing streak against De La Salle University on Saturday, March 29, at 9 am at the Araneta Coliseum.

Noel Kampton exploded for 25 points as the De La Salle University Green Spikers defeated the defending champions National University Bulldogs, 25-22, 25-27, 25-21, 25-17, on Sunday, March 23.

Kampton had 21 attack points, two blocks, and two aces. Vince Maglinao scored  20 points on 17 attacks and three blocks, while Glen Ventura contributed 14 points. Jade Disquitado scored a team-high 15 points for the Bulldogs, while Buds Buddin and Leo Aringo combined for 22 points.

Because of the win, the Green Spikers are now in a tie with the Blue Eagles for the third spot with an identical 5-3 win-loss record. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs still stand at number 2 with a 6-2 card.

After the game, Green Spikers head coach Jose Roque reminded his team to be consistent as they enter the crucial stretch of the eliminations.

He said, ‘Mahalaga ito sa amin kasi kung ‘yung goal namin is beyond the top four, kailangan talaga namin ito ipanalo and luckily, ito na-bless kami. Kailangan kasi nila, ‘yun ‘yung always na nire-remind ko, na kailangan maging consistent kami para ma-reach namin ‘yung standard namin.”

The De La Salle University will face the University of Santo Tomas on Saturday, March 29, at 9 am at the Araneta Coliseum. Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas will try to bounce back against the University of the Philippines on Wednesday, March 26, at 9 am at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles scored seven service aces in their 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 win against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons on Saturday, March 22. In comparison, the Fighting Maroons recorded zero aces.

Amil Pacinio led the Blue Eagles with 17 points on 12 attacks, two blocks, and three aces, while Kennedy Batas and Jian Salarzon combined for 24 points. Daniel Nicolas and Tommy Castrodes scored 10 points apiece for the Fighting Maroons.

With the win, the Blue Eagles are now tied with the De La Salle University Green Spikers at the third spot with an identical 5-3 win-loss record, while the Fighting Maroons dropped to the seventh place with a 2-6 card.

As the elimination round entered the second round, Blue Eagles head coach Vince Mangulabnan could not hide his excitement. He said, “Masaya ako sa pinakita ng team kasi itong second round sabi ko nag-reset na kami kasi hindi siya like nung first round na wala kaming guide or any pwedeng reviewin or kahit ‘yung ibang teams. Itong second round, mababago lahat kasi nag-meet na nung first round, ito na ‘yung time para sa basahan talaga ng laro.”

The Ateneo de Manila University will face Adamson University on Saturday, March 29, at 11 am at the Araneta Coliseum. Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines will face the defending champions, the National University, on Wednesday, March 26, at 9 am at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Five Adamson University Soaring Falcons scored in double-digits in their hard-fought 25-21, 23-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12 win against the University of the East Red Warriors on Saturday, March 23.

Mark Coguimbal led the team with 17 points on 12 attacks and five blocks, while Jude Aguilar and Marc Paulino had 15 points apiece. Dan Gutierrez contributed 14 points, while Ricardo Obeda added 12. Axel Defeo scored 22 points in 14 attacks and eight blocks for the Red Warriors, while Raquim Aceron scored 20 points in 18 points, a block, and an ace.

With the win, the Soaring Falcons rose in the standings to sixth place with a 2-6 win-loss record, while the Red Warriors are still winless at the last spot with eight losses.

Despite the team’s hard-fought, five-set victory, Soaring Falcons head coach Raffy Mosuela was contented, and hoped that it would start a winning run this round. He said, “Hopefully, sana ito na ‘yung start. Every team naman kasi nag-a-adjust kaya nag-fifth set. It’s because may adjustments din ang UE. Sana mag-continue lang itong pagpapanalo namin.”

The Adamson University will face the Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday, March 29, at 11 am at the Araneta Coliseum. Meanwhile, the University of the East will face the unbeaten Far Eastern University on Wednesday, March 26, at 11 am at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
