UAAP Season 87 Men’s Volleyball BY THE NUMBERS: Tamaraws Survive Fighting Maroons in 5 Sets

The Far Eastern University Tamaraws survived a gritty University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons to keep the top spot in the standings.

The Tamaraws still hold to their top spot with a 10-1 win-loss record, closely followed by the defending champions, the National University Bulldogs, with a 9-2 record.

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers and the De La Salle University Green Spikers are currently tied at the third and fourth spot with an identical 7-4 win-loss record.

The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Ealges are in the fifth spot with a 6-5 win-loss record, while the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons are in sixth with a 3-8 record.

The Adamson University Soaring Falcons are in the seventh spot with a 2-9 win-loss record, while the University of the East Red Warriors are still winless in 11 games.

Here’s everything you missed in last weekend’s Volleyball Tournament.

It took the Far Eastern University Tamaraws two hours and eighteen minutes to defeat the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 29-31, 15-12, on Sunday, April 6.

Zhydryx Saavedra scored a team-high 29 points in 28 attacks, while Mikko Espartero had 16 points in 12 attacks, three blocks, and an ace. Lirick Mendoza and Doula Ndongala scored 15 points apiece.

For the Fighting Maroons, Olayemi Raheem scored 25 points in 23 attacks, while Tommy Castrodes contributed 17 points in 15 attacks and two blocks. Angelo Lipata added 11 points.

Despite the long match, Tamaraws head coach Eddieson Orcullo was happy that his boys held their game in the fifth set. He said, “Maganda ‘yung kapit ng bawat isa [sa fifth set]. Medyo all the way, naging lamang din [ang UP], e. Naghiwalay lang yata nung dulo na. Ang pinakamaganda lang sa nangyari sa amin is ready kami sa kung anong sitwasyon man ‘yung dumating at yung love ng bawat isa sa bawat isa, nandoon.”

With the win, the Tamaraws still hold the top spot with a 10-1 win-loss record, while the Fighting Maroons are in the sixth spot with a 3-8 record.

The Far Eastern University will face the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles on Wednesday, April 9, at 11 am. Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines will take on the De La Salle University Green Spikers on Sunday, April 13, at 11 am.

The defending champions, the National University Bulldogs, had 47 attack points in their straight set 25-17, 25-16, 25-15 victory against the Adamson University Soaring Falcons on Sunday, April 6.

Buds Buddin scored 16 points in 15 attacks, while Leo Aringo and Leo Ordiales combined for 23 points.

For the Soaring Falcons, no player scored in double digits as Joel Menor was limited to seven points, while Mark Coguimbal and Marc Kenneth Paulino had six points apiece.

After the game, Bulldogs head coach Dante Alinsunurin applauded his team’s reception and digs. He said, “Ito na siguro ‘yung hinihintay namin na sitwasyon na tumaas ‘yung percentage namin sa side-out kasi ‘yung pasa namin talagang nagiging problema namin mula simula, buti kanina gumanda ‘yung pasa namin kaya na-execute namin ‘yung gusto naming gawin sa loob ng court.”

With the win, the Bulldogs are still second in the standings with a 9-2 win-loss record, while the Soaring Falcons dropped to seventh with a 2-9 record.

The National University will face the University of the East Red Warriors on Wednesday, April 9, at 9 am. Meanwhile, Adamson University will take on the Far Eastern University Tamaraws on Sunday, April 12, at 11 am.

The De La Salle University Green Spikers had nine block points in their 30-28, 25-16, 25-22 victory against the University of the East Red Warriors on Saturday, April 5.

Noel Kampton scored a team-high 13 points in 12 attacks, while Nathaniel Del Pilar and Michael John Fortuna combined for 15 points.

For the Red Warriors, Roy Piojo scored 14 points in 13 attacks and an ace, while Xjhann Camaymayan contributed 11 points.

After the match, Green Spikers head coach Jose Roque was happy as all his 14 players played their own game in this match. He said, “Happy naman talaga ako kasi we’re expecting na even if UE [is] low rank, we expect na lalaban sila. Pero sabi ko sa team ko, we really need to balance ‘yung tao kasi mahaba pa ang liga. Kapag mababad ‘yung starters ko, baka sa dulo mahirapan. Kaya sabi ko sa bench, prepare yourselves kasi kayo dapat ang mag-balanse niyan.”

With the win, the Green Spikers are tied in the third and fourth spot with the University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers with an identical 7-4 win-loss record, while the Red Warriors are still winless at the bottom of the standings with 11 losses in as many games.

The De La Salle University will face the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons on Sunday, April 13, at 11 am. Meanwhile, the University of the East will take on the National University Bulldogs on Wednesday, April 9, at 9 am.

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers showed their blocking prowess in their 26-24, 25-17, 25-22 victory against the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles on Saturday, April 5, as they recorded 13 block points. In comparison, the Blue Eagles only recorded 2 block points.

Josh Ybañez scored 24 points in 20 attacks, three aces, and a block, while Popoy Colinares contributed 13 points.

For the Blue Eagles, Kennedy Batas was the lone bright spot as he scored 20 points in 19 attacks and 

After the game, Golden Spikers head coach Odjie Mamon said that there were still improvements that needed to be done for his team. He said, “Thankful ako sa mga players, nag-respond sila, na-execute ‘yung plano. May lapses pero understandable. ‘Yung last part nga ng first set may slip-ups pero kalma lang and nakapag-execute kami.”

With the win, the Golden Tigresses are tied in the third and fourth spot with the De La Salle University Green Spikers with an identical 7-4 win-loss record, while the Blue Eagles dropped to the fifth spot with a 6-5 record.

The University of Santo Tomas will face the University of the East Red Warriors on Saturday, April 12, at 9 am. Meanwhile, the Ateneo de Manila University will take on the Far Eastern University Tamaraws on Wednesday, April 9, at 1 am.
