The defending champions National University Lady Bulldogs are still undefeated in the ongoing UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament as they win against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.
With five wins and zero losses, the Lady Bulldogs are still on top of the standings, followed by the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses with a 5-1 win-loss record.
Since losing their opening-day match against the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, the Golden Tigresses are now on a five-game winning streak as they defeated the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles and the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.
The Lady Tamaraws are currently third in the standings with a 4-2 record, followed by the De La Salle University Lady Spikers with a 3-2 win-loss card.

Angge Poyos, Regina Jurado, and Marga Altea combined for 48 big points as the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses defeated the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles in straight sets, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21, on Sunday, March 9.
Poyos has 19 points on 16 attacks, two blocks, and an ace, while Jurado and Altea delivered 14 and 13 points, respectively. For the Blue Eagles, Alexis Miner led the team with 13 points, while team captain Lyann de Guzman added 11.
Despite their straight-set victory, Golden Tigresses assistant coach Yani Fernandez said there were still things that they need to polish. He said, “Thankful kami, first time namin maka-straight set. Ipo-polish pa namin ‘yung mga skills kasi nagkakaroon ng doubt and confusion sa game namin, especially sa receiving formation, kaya kailangan naming itama at…kailangan committed sila sa lahat ng gagawin nila.”

The one-two punch of Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon combined for 33 big points in their straight-set victory against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 13-25, 23-25, 22-25, on Sunday, March 9.
Belen had 17 points and seven excellent receptions, while Solomon was all over the stat sheet with 16 points on 13 attacks and three blocks. On the side of the Fighting Maroons, Kassandra Doering was the spark off the bench, scoring a team-high 11 points, while Kianne Olango contributed 10.
For Lady Bulldogs head coach Sherwin Menses, he trusted the seniors Belen and Solomon to lead the team especially in crucial parts of the game. He said, “Happy naman siyempre, nakuha namin yung panalo. Pero siyempre yung situation nung second and third [sets] magkaiba kasi. Naka-recover din kami doon sa run ng UP. Pero knowing NU naman, mga seniors na sila, so alam na rin naman nila yung gagawin nila.”

The Far Eastern Univeristy Lady Tamaraws limited the Adamson University Lady Falcons to just 10 points in their four-set, 23-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-10, on Saturday, March 8. It was the lowest score a team has recorded in the ongoing tournament.
Gerzel Petallo and Jean Asis combined for 30 points, while Faida Bakanke contributed 13 markets. For the Adamson Lady Falcons, Shaina Nitura had a game-high 24 points, while Frances Mordi had 12.
With the win, the Lady Tamaraws are back on track after suffering a defeat at the hands of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons. FEU assistant coach Manolo Refugia said, “Happy naman kami sa nakitang performance ng mga players. Nagbubunga na ‘yung from heartbreaking na talo sa UP. Paunti-unti nakakabalik so naipakita na nila ‘yung FEU Lady Tamaraws talaga.”

The De La Salle University Lady Spikers had a block party when they recorded 15 block points in their 25-12, 23-25, 25-14, 25-27 win against the University of the East Lady Red Warriors on Saturday, March 8.
Angel Canino led the team with 20 points on 14 attacks and three service aces, while Baby Jyne Soreno and Alleiah Malaluan added 12 points apiece. Amie Provido had 11 markers. For the Lady Red Warriors, Nessa Bangayan was the lone bright spot, with 17 points on 16 attacks.
The Lady Spikers may have won the game, but it wasn’t the victory that the coaches wanted to see. Assistant coach Noel Orcullo said after the match, “Hindi naging maganda ‘yung resulta ng game. We won, pero hindi ‘yun ‘yung gusto namin makita sa kanila. ‘Yun nga, nakuha ng UE ‘yung second set – nandoon na kami, lamang kami, pero nag-relax sila, parang hindi nila nirespeto, hinintay na lang nila ang UE kung magkakamali o aayaw na.”

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses had 65 attack points in their 25-11, 25-23, 23-25, 25-12 win against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons on Wednesday, March 5.
Regina Jurado was the top scorer for the Golden Tigresses with 22 points on 21 attacks, followed by Angge Poyos with 21 points on 19 attacks. Kianne Olango delivered 18 points for the Fighting Maroons, while Joan Monares contributed 13.
Golden Tigresses assistant coach Yani Fernandez was not happy about the errors of the team that cost them the third set. He said, “Regarding sa third set, talagang ‘yung errors sobrang dami and sumabay ‘yung players namin sa pace ng play ng UP. Nung pagdating ng fourth, sabi namin hindi tayo pwedeng maging ganito, kailangan reset and regroup tayo. Kaya naging maganda ang resulta.”

The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws recorded seven aces in their 25-23, 25-19, 25-20 victory against the University of the East Lady Red Warriors on Wednesday, March 5.
Gerzel Petallo had 12 points, while Chenie Tagaod and Mitzi Panangin contributed 11 points apiece. For the Lady Red Warriors, KC Cepada and Nessa Bangayan had 14 points apiece.
Lady Tamaraws head coach Tina Salak revealed that her goal for the team was to enter the Final Four, so every win is important to them. She said, “Siyempre mas maganda yung ganitong winning trend. Nag-a-eye kami makapasok ng Final Four, kaya the rest of the remaining games, maipanalo namin.”
