The De La Salle University Lady Spikers avenged their first-round loss against the Golden Tigresses in the second round of eliminations in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
Because of the win, the Lady Spikers solidified their hold in the second spot of the standings with a 6-3 win-loss record, just behind the defending champions National University Lady Bulldogs with a 9-1 card.
The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws are in the third spot with a 6-4 win-loss record, closely followed by the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses with a 5-4 record.
The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons are holding the fifth spot with a 5-5 win-loss record, while the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles are in the sixth spot with a 4-5 record.
The Adamson University Lady Falcons are in the seventh spot with a 3-6 win-loss record, while the already-eliminated University of the East Lady Red Warriors are still winless in 10 games.

The De La Salle University Lady Spikers team captain Angel Canino broke her scoring record as she recorded 27 points in her team’s 15-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, 16-14, against their first-round tormentors, the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses, on Saturday, March 29.
Canino’s 27 points was the highest point she scored this season. She had much-needed help from Shevana Laput, who scored 16 points, and Amie Provido and Alleiah Malaluan, who combined for 22 points.
For the Golden Tigresses, Regina Jurado led the team with 22 points in 21 attacks and a block, while Angeline Poyos was limited to 12 points.
Surprisingly, the Golden Tigresses recorded zero service aces, compared to seven by the Lady Spikers.
At the end of the game, Lady Spikers deputy coach Noel Orcullo said that the game was a fight of heart, not of skills. He said, “Sabi nga namin sa mga bata, umpisa pa lang, gustuhin niyo manalo, ito labanan ng puso. ‘Yan ‘yung lagi naming sinasabi sa kanila na hindi pupwedeng papasok tayo sa loob na ang umiiral sa atin ‘yung takot.”
With the win, the Lady Spikers now hold the solo second spot in the standings with a 6-3 win-loss record, while the Golden Tigresses remained at fifth spot with 5-4 card.
The De La Salle University will face their archrivals, the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, on Wednesday, April 2, at 1 pm. Later that day, the Golden Tigresses will try to end their three-game losing streak against the Adamson University Lady Falcons at 3 pm.

After losing against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, Alyssa Solomon’s 30-point explosion towed them to a 25-22, 24-26, 26-24, 25-18 victory against the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws on Sunday, March 30.
Solomon had 26 attacks, three blocks, and an ace. Team captain Bella Belen contributed 18 points in 15 attacks and three blocks, while Vange Alinsug added 13.
For the side of the Lady Tamaraws, Faida Bakante scored a team-high 21 points in 18 attacks and three blocks, while Jean Asis and Jazlyn Ellarina combined for 31 points.
After the game, Lady Bulldogs head coach Sherwin Meneses applauded his team as they bounced back from their first loss. He said, “Siyempre, thankful talaga kami kasi naka-recover kami from last game. ‘Yun naman ‘yung pinaka-importante palagi, maka-recover kami sa loss namin, maka-move on so start ulit. Start ulit para makakuha ng twice-to-beat [advantage].”
The Lady Bulldogs remained at the top of the standings with a 9-1 win-loss record, while the Lady Tamaraws are currently in third spot with a 6-4 record.
The National University will face the Adamson University Lady Falcons on Sunday, April 6, at 3 pm. Meanwhile, the Lady Tamaraws will face the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons earlier that day at 1 pm.

The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles kept their final four hopes alive after recording 12 service aces in their 25-23, 25-14, 25-23 victory against the Adamson University Lady Falcons on Saturday, March 29.
Alexis Miner led the team with 13 points in 10 attacks, two aces, and a block, while Lyann de Guzman and Zey Pacia scored 12 and 10, respectively. For the Lady Falcons, Shaina Nitura was the lone bright spot with 21 points.
After the game, Blue Eagles head coach Sergio Veloso lauded his team’s services, ultimately leading them to victory. He said, “I think our best skill today was our serves; our serves did a lot of damage to the opponent. This is important, and in the hard moments, my team continued to focus, and that’s the best thing to do for this moment.”
With the win, the Blue Eagles rose to the sixth spot with a 4-5 win-loss record, while the Lady Falcons are in the seventh place with a 3-6 record.
The Blue Eagles will face their archrivals, the De La Salle University Lady Spikers, on Wednesday, April 2, at 1 pm. Later that day, Adamson University will take on the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses at 3 pm.

The one-two punch of Joan Monares and Irah Jaboneta combined for 28 points in the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons’ 25-21, 25-18, 25-17 victory against the University of the East Lady Red Warriors on Sunday, March 30.
Monares had 15 points in 10 attacks, three aces, and two blocks, while Jaboneta had 13 points, all in attacks.
Nessa Bangayan was the lone bright spot with 13 points for the Lady Red Warriors.
Despite the win, Fighting Maroons head coach Benson Bocboc lamented how his team played inside the court. He said, “Medyo magulo, medyo magulo ‘yung galaw ng team ngayon. So, maraming errors ‘yung kalaban kaya nagkataon, we got the game. Pero sa amin, kulang, kulang pa so siguro medyo shaky pa nung umpisa, pero darating ‘yung time… kasi second round na, e, hindi na pwede ‘yung ganun na shaky.”
With the win, the Fighting Maroons rose to the fifth spot with a 5-5 win-loss record, while the Lady Red Warriors were officially eliminated from the final four contention as they are still winless in 10 games.
The University of the Philippines will face the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws on Sunday, April 6, at 1 pm. Meanwhile, the University of the East will take on the De La Salle University Lady Spikers on Saturday, April 5, at 3 pm.
