The UST Golden Tigresses avoided a collapse and defeated the UE Lady Red Warriors in straight sets, 25-21, 26-24, 25-20, at the Quadricentennial Pavilion to stay in contention for a Final Four spot in the UAAP Season 88 Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

UST with Near-Epic Collapse

In the second set, the Golden Tigresses were already at set point, 24-15, but the Lady Red Warriors slowly erased the nine-point deficit to tie the set at 24-all. However, Shania Olmoguez committed a costly service error before Avril Bron shut the door with a block to seal the set.

The momentum remained in favor of the Golden Tigresses in the third set, as Cassie Carballo sealed the match with an ace.

“Obviously, hindi pa ito [yung top form]. Nakita natin na marami pang need ayusin, especially unang-una ’yung disiplina… Medyo nauulit siya, kaya disiplina, mental toughness, at emotional toughness. Lesson learned na kahit lamang ka, hindi ka pwedeng mag-relax. Kailangan tapusin talaga hanggang sa dulo,” said Golden Tigresses assistant coach Lerma Giron.

Angge Poyos Leads the Way

Angge Poyos led the Golden Tigresses with 17 points built on 14 attacks, 2 service aces, and 1 block, along with 9 excellent digs and 6 excellent receptions. Reg Jurado added 9 points and 9 excellent digs.

Carballo recorded 17 excellent sets, while Detdet Pepito had 7 excellent digs and 5 excellent receptions.

For the Lady Red Warriors, KC Cepada once again led the way with 17 points, while Beatrice Zamudio added 12 markers.

The Golden Tigresses will next face the Adamson Lady Falcons on Saturday, April 11, at 5:00 p.m. at the Filoil Centre. Meanwhile, the Lady Red Warriors will take on the NU Lady Bulldogs on Sunday, April 12, at the Quadricentennial Pavilion.
