After dropping its first two assignments, the UST Golden Tigresses have roared back in emphatic fashion, securing a second-straight win by sweeping the UE Lady Red Warriors, 25-11, 25-14, 25-14, in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
UST set the tone early, racing to an 8-0 start in the opening frame behind energized play in front of its home crowd. The Golden Tigresses showed no signs of slowing down in the second set, storming to a 10-2 advantage to keep UE on the defensive.
UST Delivers Command Performance
The third set followed a similar script, with the España-based squad building a commanding 11-1 lead en route to securing its second win of the season and evening its record at 2-2.
“Happy and proud kasi slowly, nakaka-adapt kami sa bawat isa kung ano ‘yung gusto naming gawin. We know na ang dami pa naming kailangang i-improve, pero ang good thing, meron kaming magandang result ngayon,” said Golden Tigresses head coach Shaq Delos Santos.
UST controlled the match from start to finish, with Angge Poyos and Jonna Perdido combining for 21 points, highlighted by 13 attacks, 4 blocks, and 4 aces. Avril Bron, Marga Altea, and Reg Jurado chipped in 8 points each.
Setter Carballo orchestrated the offense with 13 excellent sets and added 5 points, while team captain Detdet Pepito anchored the floor defense with 10 excellent digs and 6 excellent receptions.
For UE, no player reached double figures. KC Cepada paced the Lady Red Warriors with 9 points, while Nessa Bangayan had 3. Samantha Taylan, Princess Nogueras, and Ashley Cañete finished with two points apiece.
The Golden Tigresses gear up for a showdown against the Adamson Lady Falcons on Saturday, March 7, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Meanwhile, the Lady Red Warriors brace for a tough challenge against defending champion NU Lady Bulldogs on Wednesday, March 4, at the same venue.
