The UST Golden Tigresses cruised past the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20, to improve to 4-3 at the end of the first round of the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

With the victory, the Golden Tigresses moved into a tie for third place with the Lady Tamaraws. The outcome of the match between the Adamson University Lady Falcons and the UP Fighting Maroons will determine who will join UST and FEU in the standings.

UST in Full Control

UST dictated the pace of the match from the start, limiting FEU’s scoring runs and maintaining control in all three sets. In the third frame, the Lady Tamaraws briefly threatened after Gerzel Petallo and Lovely Lopez combined to give FEU a slim 15-13 advantage.

However, FEU committed five costly errors that allowed the Golden Tigresses to swing the momentum and build a 20-16 lead. From there, UST kept its composure and closed out the match.

“Nag-start ’yan sa training namin last two days, talagang quality yung inensayo kasi hindi biro si FEU. Niremind lang namin ‘yung players na lahat ng inensayo kailangan lumabas sa game,” said Golden Tigresses assistant coach Yani Fernandez.

Angge Poyos led UST with 16 points and 9 excellent receptions, while Regina Jurado and Avril Bron added 10 points each.

Setter Cassie Carballo orchestrated the offense with 15 excellent sets, while team captain Detdet Pepito anchored the floor defense with 11 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions.

For FEU, Jaz Ellarina was the lone player in double figures with 10 points, while Petallo added 9 markers and 11 excellent receptions. Faida Bakanke was limited to 8 points.
