Jonathan Kuminga, the 22 year old 6-foot-8 player from Democratic Republic of Congo has been in the spotlight for the Golden State Warriors front office as they are still unsure whether to keep him or not.
The Only Team Not to Make a Move in the 2025-26 Offseason Free Agency
There’s no surprise no GSW fans in X on how disappointed they are in the front office this whole summer.
Who could they not be enraged? The team has not made a single move in signing any free agent in the offseason, literally 0 signings or cutting any player from the team.
The worst part? They’re the only ones to do such a thing.
This then begs the question lingering in the minds of both the fans and Warriors front office, should they sign Kuminga to an extended contract? Or trade him?
The Highs and Lows in 4 Years at San Francisco
Just like the waves of the pacific ocean surrounding San Francisco, JK has gone through ‘ups and downs’ in his 4-year stint with the multi-champion team.
In his 1st year being selected as the #7th overall pick in the 2021-22 draft, he played in 70 regular games and averaged 9.3 points, 0.9 assists, 3.3 rebounds, shot 51.3% from the field and 33.6% from the 3-point area.
He then played 16 games in the postseason in that same year and recorded 5.2 points, 0.5 assists, 1.7 boards, shot 50% from the field and 23.1% from beyond the arc.
The Warriors then won their 4th title in the “Stephen Curry Era.”
After that, Kuminga still went on to have a leap in his scoring and individual performance.
- 2022-23
- 67 Games in the Regular Season
- 9.9 points, 1.9 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 0.5 blocks, 0.6 steals, 52.5 FG%, 37% from 3-pointers
- 10 Games in the Postseason
- 3.4 points, 0.5 assists, 0.9 rebounds, 54.2 FG%, 42.9% from 3-pointers
- Had a 2nd Round Exit against the Los Angeles Lakers after 6 games
- 2023-24
- 74 Games in the Regular Season
- 16.1 PPG, 2.2 APG, 4.8 RPG, 0.5 BPG, 0.7 SPG, 52.9 FG%, 32.1% from 3-pointers
- Missed the Playoffs and lost in the Play-In Game against the Sacramento Kings
- 2024-25
- 47 Games in Regular Season
- 15.3 PPG, 2.2 APG, 4.6 RPG, 0.4 BPG, 0.8 SPG, 45.4 FG%, 30.5% from 3-pointers
- 8 Games in the Postseason
- 15.3 PPG, 1.3 APG, 2.5 RPG, 0.5 BPG, 0.5 SPG, 48.4 FG%, 40% 3-pointers
- Had a 2nd Round Exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves after 5 games
From here, we can greatly say that in his stats alone, the more he becomes a vital piece in Head Coach Steve Kerr’s rotation, he can produce a lot of positive impact for the team whether he’s part of the starters or not.
This now becomes a problem for the superiors of GSW…
Money Talks: Stay here for a year? 2 years? 3 years?
With all of his performances, the GSW front office is still not fully brought to the idea that Kuminga can reach “Superstardome” status.
They don’t even know what role fits Jonathan the most, so what to do next?
Keep him? Or trade him for a more established role player and viable assets?
In the recent report of Shams Charania via X, Warriors owner Joe Lacob has sat face to face to talk with Kuminga in the last month and asked him:
“Do you want to be here? Do you want to be with the Warriors?”
Kuminga then responded
“Do you even want me?”
Shams then revealed all of the offers that they have presented with Kuminga:
- 1 year – $7.9 million qualifying offer
- 2 years – $45 million
- (newest offer) 3 years – $75.2 million with Team Option in the 3rd Year
All of this has not interested the 1x champion.
Turned down Sign-and-Trade deals from Kings and Suns
Despite JK still not signing any deal yet, it’s then revealed that the Warriors have turned down offers from both the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns.
Suns offered:
- 4 years
- $80 – $88 million
- Royce O’Neal and multiple 2nd Round Picks
Kings offered:
- 3 years
- $63 – $66 million
- Malik Monk and a 1st Round Pick
And now the training camp will begin in less than a month, the question remains, should the Warriors let go or keep Jonathan Kuminga?
