The Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots are banking on size and skill in the form of Terrell Brown-Soares for the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. With the midseason conference allowing reinforcements of unlimited height, the Hotshots have turned to a well-traveled big man who blends interior presence with perimeter touch as they look to build a championship contender under LA Tenorio.
Terrell Brown-Soares, the Stretch Big
Brown-Soares, a 6-foot-10 American forward-center, carved out a steady college career in U.S. NCAA Division I play, suiting up first for the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to the University of San Diego. Across his collegiate stops, he developed into a dependable frontcourt option, showing flashes of range that hinted at a modern big man skill set.
Though he went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft, Brown-Soares wasted little time taking his game overseas. He began building his professional résumé in Europe, logging minutes in the Czech Republic and Romania before finding a groove in Poland’s competitive domestic league. Most recently, he suited up for Miasto Szkła Krosno, where he showcased his ability to stretch the floor while still doing the dirty work inside.
At 27, Terrell Brown-Soares enters the PBA with a reputation as a mobile big who can score from multiple levels. Unlike traditional back-to-the-basket imports, he’s comfortable stepping out beyond the arc, which could open driving lanes for Magnolia’s guards and wings and give the Hotshots a different look offensively while still adding much-needed size.
A Fit for the Commissioner’s Cup Grind
Terrell Brown-Soares’ calling card has been versatility. In his latest international stint in the Polish Basketball League, playing for Miasto Szkła Krosno, Brown-Soares put up 9.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks on 44% shooting overall, 41.5% from downtown, and 95.7% from the foul line. Prior to that, he played 35 games for CSM Steaua Bucuresti in the Romanian Divizia A and put up 13.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks on 54.6% shooting overall, 43.4% from the arc, and 91.1% from the charity stripe.
Indeed, that superb shooting touch is a definite weapon for the 6-foot-10 American, who will be joining a team that has relied more and more on outside shooting under Tenorio but is in need of an anchor down low. Terrell Brown-Soares seems a fit for that unenviable role, but whether or not he’s the missing piece to Magnolia’s championship puzzle remains to be seen.
