In a marquee matchup between league powerhouses the San Antonio Spurs and the Detroit Pistons, Victor Wembanyama stood tall, leading his Spurs to a 114-103 victory over the Pistons on Tuesday behind his monster double-double.
Wemby tallied 21 points, 17 rebounds, and a monstrous 6 total blocks to lead his team to its ninth consecutive victory.
Both the Spurs and Pistons were on hot streaks entering the matchup, as Detroit had won five straight, while San Antonio had won eight consecutive games.
Spurs Keep Momentum Going
Aside from Wembanyama, Devin Vassell also had a hot shooting night, notching 28 points of his own to lead the Spurs in scoring.
“We knew they were gonna be a challenge, they’re a great team… We’re just trying to get out in transition, get stops, find the open man, that’s what we did,” Vassell said postgame.
With the victory, San Antonio continues to be the hottest team in the NBA while also solidifying its spot as second in the NBA‘s Western Conference.
Cade Cunningham Held to Bad Shooting Night
Pistons star Cade Cunningham, who recently emerged as a possible MVP frontrunner, was kept in check by the Spurs’ suffocating defense.
Cunningham, who usually averages 25 points per game, had only 16 points, along with 10 assists, on an atrocious 19.2% shooting.
Stepping up for Cunningham was recent All-Star Jalen Duren, who paced the Pistons in the loss, as he notched 25 points and 14 rebounds, including an emphatic poster on Wembanyama.
The Spurs will look to continue their winning streak against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday, while the Pistons look to bounce back on Thursday against the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
