The Philippine Women’s National Football Team—the Filipinas—opened their 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup stint with a 1-0 loss against host country Australia on Sunday.
Filipinas Suffer Early Blow Against Australia
The Matildas, backed by a jam-packed crowd at Optus Stadium in Perth, struck early.
In the 14th minute, star striker Sam Kerr rose inside the box to head home a precise delivery from Caitlin Foord, giving the world No. 15 side the only goal it would need. The finish marked Kerr’s 70th international goal and set the tone for what seemed like a long evening for the Filipinas.
Moments later, Australia nearly doubled its advantage when Hayley Raso found the net, but a VAR review ruled her marginally offside, keeping the deficit at one.
Filipinas Defense Stands Tall
Conceding early could have unraveled the Filipinas, especially against a side that previously handed them a couple of 8–0 routs, including in the Olympic qualifiers in 2023.
Instead, the visitors regrouped and showcased remarkable defensive organization.
Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel delivered an inspired performance between the posts. She denied Steph Catley on a dangerous free kick before halftime and repeatedly frustrated Australia’s attackers in the second half. Attempts from Clare Wheeler and Katrina Gorry were calmly handled, while substitute Mary Fowler was also kept at bay late in the match.
Anchored by composed center-backs and disciplined fullbacks, the Filipinas absorbed wave after wave of pressure. Australia dominated possession and unleashed 15 shots, six on target, but the Philippine back line refused to break again.
Despite limited attacking opportunities, while also managing just a single attempt, the Philippines maintained structure and focus until the final whistle.
Aiming for a Bounce Back Against South Korea
Though the result handed Australia three points to top Group A, the Filipinas emerged with belief intact after holding the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup semifinalists to a solitary goal. The loss, therefore, could be a clear sign of progress and resilience on the continental stage, and a huge improvement in the Filipinas’ defense.
The Philippine Women’s National Football Team now turn their attention to a crucial March 5 clash against South Korea.
