The Converge FiberXers opened their PBA Commissioner’s Cup campaign on a high note, besting guest team Macau Black Knights, 102-94. Converge, though, had to weather some tense moments, as the Black Knights proved to be a tough nut to crack.
What Happened?
It was a tale of two quarters in the opening half, with Converge racing out to a quick 27-19 lead after the first frame. Macau bounced back in the second, finding the range from distance to outscore the FiberXers, 34-22, to take a 53-49 halftime lead. A back-and-forth third canto then set the stage for a frantic finish, with Converge eventually unleashing 16 unanswered points late in the fourth to notch the victory.
Who Stood Out?
Seven players scored in double figures for Converge, but two players really stood out: Alec Stockton and Archie Concepcion. Stockton was a two-way menace, putting up 18 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 6 steals while shutting down Macau’s Damian Chongqui. Concepcion, meanwhile, fired 16 off the bench, including 11 in the second half.
The Black Knights, on the other hand, drew standout performances from Chongqui, Jenning Leung, and Phoenix Shackelford off the bench. In fact, Chongqui was Macau’s point of attack before Stockton shut him down in the second half. Leung, meanwhile, scored most of his points in the first half, while Shackelford proved to be the most consistent Knight.

3 Keys to the Game
- Fourth-quarter storm. Converge was still down 82-79 entering the fourth after some shaky play in the first three quarters. In fact, it was still behind, 92-88, with a little over five minutes left. That’s when the FiberXers unleashed a 14-0 blast that took the fight out of the Black Knights.
- Defense. After surrendering over 20 points in each of the first three quarters, including 34 and 29 in the middle two, the FiberXers hunkered down on defense and just shut down Macau in the fourth. Stockton led the way, shackling Chongqui and getting 3 steals in the fourth quarter alone.
- Interior scoring. Converge’s usually prolific outside shooting was off against Macau, but the FiberXers manufactured points by consistently getting to the basket. This aggressiveness resulted in Converge scoring 58 points in the paint compared to only 32 for the Black Knights.
