Alex Eala will get her 2026 Miami Open campaign rolling against Germany’s Laura Siegemund. This comes after the latter beat Petra Marcinko, 6-4, 6-4, in the Round of 128 on Wednesday morning. Marcinko, incidentally, lost to Eala earlier this year at the ASB Classic in New Zealand.
The Eala versus Siegemund matchup will be the first time the two players will meet, although recent reports say they have been practicing together during the BNP Paribas Open and in the build-up to the Miami Open.
Who Is Laura Siegemund?
Germany’s Laura Siegemund is a certified WTA veteran, joining the tour way back in 2003 in her home country. Now 38, she remains one of the craftiest and most resilient players on the WTA Tour, with her game built on a sophisticated blend of variety and tactical intelligence.
Currently ranked No. 53, Siegemund has two WTA titles to her name, with her first coming at the 2016 Swedish Open in Båstad, followed by another one at the 2017 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. She also has multiple appearances in all four Grand Slams, making it to the quarterfinals in both the French Open (once in 2020) and Wimbledon (once in 2025). The German ace also won a Grand Slam in women’s doubles at the US Open in 2020.
Needless to say, Laura Siegemund’s No. 53 ranking belies the fact that she has long been one of the WTA Tour’s better players, one with a diverse skill set that often leaves younger, hard-hitting opponents searching for rhythm. As for her playstyle, Siegemund thrives on disrupting baseline patterns with slice, drop shots, and frequent forays to the net—a style that demands constant mental alertness from anyone across the net.
A Litmus Test for Alex Eala
While they’re far apart in the rankings, Siegemund nonetheless represents quite the litmus test for Eala’s power-oriented game. While they may have shared the practice courts as sparring partners recently, the transition from a friendly training set to the high-stakes environment of a WTA 1000 main draw is where Siegemund’s experience could prove to be the difference.
For the veteran, this match is about using her defensive variety and veteran savvy to neutralize Eala’s aggressive groundstrokes, turning the encounter into a physical and mental chess match where every short ball and change of pace is a calculated move.
The date and time of the Round of 64 match between Alex Eala and Laura Siegemund is still to be announced as of press time.
