Chenae Basarte of the Benilde Lady Blazers will be playing her final matches with the Taft-based squad. And if things break the Lady Blazers’ way, the graduating star will have a golden farewell to cap her superb collegiate career.
That would be a fitting ending for someone who has helped the Lady Blazers become a dynasty. And as she gears up for her last games with Benilde, Basarte is just hoping that she will be remembered for the discipline and leadership she has shown throughout her career.
“Siguro po is ‘yung kung paano ko dalhin ‘yung team, ‘yung leadership po siyempre, and kung paano ko shine-share and dinadala yung mga bata, kasi maraming mga bata ngayon,” Basarte told Rebanse in an exclusive interview after she helped lead Benilde to a winning end to the eliminations by making quick work of the Mapua Lady Cardinals.
Chenae Basarte Wants to Pass on a Legacy
A part of the Green and White since Season 98, Chenae Basarte was appointed team captain ahead of the NCAA Season 101 Women’s Volleyball Tournament—and she has taken on that role with zeal as she hopes to leave behind a team that is fearless and disciplined, just like her.
“Gusto ko may maiwan na matapang kami, maayos ‘yung galaw namin, and disciplined. [Gusto ko] ma-share ‘yung kung anong natutunan ko sa four-peat na mayroon kami,” added Basarte, who is hoping for a fifth title as she leaves.
And if that is to happen, the Lady Blazers will need to show the consistency they have shown since the very beginning of Season 101—especially now that Benilde is taking on a powerhouse Letran Lady Knights team that has lost only once this season.
“For me, consistency [is key]. Kasi pangit pagkananalo tas biglang matatalo, mga ganun. So, consistency din po and disiplina sa sarili—and sa laro mismo,” she said.
Chenae Basarte will play Game 1 of her last finals on Sunday, April 5, when her Lady Blazers take on the Lady Knights for all the marbles again.
