Over the past few days, the Yulo brothers—Carlos Yulo and Eldrew Yulo—were busy making noise on opposite ends of the globe.
Carlos Yulo, the double Olympic gold medalist, was in Antibes, France, putting up big numbers for his club OAJLP Gymnastique in the French Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Eldrew Yulo, the rising star, was in Cairo, Egypt, stepping onto the podium at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series. Same day, different continents, same result—the Yulo name front and center on the international gymnastics stage.
Carlos Yulo Doing His Thing, Eldrew Yulo Blazing His Path
Carlos, the reigning world champion, did in France what he usually does—score big. He posted a 14.833 in floor exercise and a 14.700 in vault to help propel OAJLP Gymnastique into the championship round of the French national championships. At this point, watching Carlos compete almost feels routine. It never actually is.
The more intriguing story, though, may be unfolding in Cairo.
Eldrew, 18, claimed a floor exercise bronze at the World Cup Series stop in the Egyptian capital with a score of 14.000—finishing behind Russians Daniel Marinov and Arsenii Dukhno, who took gold and silver with scores of 14.233 and 14.133, respectively. A bronze at a World Cup event, at 18, on Easter Sunday. Not a bad day’s work.
And he was not done. Eldrew made it a double-gold finish in Cairo with a bronze in the horizontal bar, capping off a very successful stint for the young man. The younger Yulo scored 13.733 and finished behind China’s Hongyan Li (14.400) and Cyprus’ Marios Georgiou.
This is what a takeover looks like in its early stages. Carlos Yulo has already conquered the Olympics and the world championships. Eldrew Yulo is now showing, on the same weekend his older brother is competing at the highest club level in France, that he belongs on the same global stage. Two Yulos, two countries, two podiums in a single day.
Philippine gymnastics has never had a moment quite like this.
