Alex Eala opened her Linz Open campaign in style, defeating hometown bet Julia Grabher, 6–4, 6–3, to kick off her clay-court season.
Alex Eala Breaks Through in Tight First Set
The opening set was a tightly contested affair, with both players holding serve through the first nine games. Despite the close scoreline, Eala had to fend off multiple break-point threats, showing resilience under pressure against the home favorite. Grabher tested the Filipina in several service games, but Eala held firm each time, refusing to surrender momentum. With the set deadlocked at 5-4, Eala finally found her breakthrough, capitalizing on errors from the Austrian to secure the first and only break of the set, and claim it.
Alex Eala Takes Control in Second Set
Carrying her momentum into the second frame, Eala began to assert control. She broke early to take a 3-1 lead and extended it to 4-1 after holding off attempted responses from Grabher. The Austrian briefly threatened a comeback, converting a break to close the gap to 4-3. However, Eala quickly responded, regaining control with an immediate break in the next game to restore her cushion.
From there, the Filipina stayed composed, dictating rallies with consistent groundstrokes and smart shot selection to keep Grabher on the defensive. Serving for the match at 5-3, Eala showed poise to close out the contest, sealing her 13th win of the season, and advancing to the next round.
The ability of the Rafa Nadal Academy alumna to deliver in crucial moments proved decisive as she convertedthree of seven break-point opportunities, while limiting Grabher to just one conversion despite multiple chances.
