Fresh off her title triumph at the 2026 WTA 125 Lexus Birmingham Open, Alex Eala will continue her grass-court campaign at the WTA 500 HSBC Championships.

Awaiting the Filipina star in the singles main draw is China’s Shuai Zhang.

Shuai Zhang: A Phenomenal Doubles Player

For her opening assignment, Alex Eala will face a player who has enjoyed greater success in doubles than in singles throughout her career.

Shuai Zhang has captured 21 WTA titles, 18 of which have come in doubles competition. The 36-year-old Chinese veteran also owns a grass-court title, having won the 2022 Nottingham Open doubles crown alongside Beatriz Haddad Maia.

However, Zhang’s success on grass is not limited to doubles. She has also reached seven grass-court finals, with her most recent runner-up finish coming at the 2024 Birmingham Classic.

Currently ranked World No. 64, Zhang holds a 2-0 record on grass this season and successfully advanced through the qualifying rounds of the WTA 500 HSBC Championships.

Zhang and Eala have never faced each other on the professional tour. Still, with the Filipina carrying a five-match winning streak into the tournament, fans can expect an intriguing battle as Zhang attempts to halt the momentum of the newly crowned Birmingham Open champion.
