Alex Eala completed a 5-0 winning record on grass by capturing the 2026 WTA 125 Lexus Birmingham Open title after overcoming Czech standout Nikola Bartunkova in a thrilling three-set final, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, on Sunday. The victory marked Eala’s first championship of the 2026 season and the second WTA title of her career following her breakthrough triumph in Guadalajara last year.

Bartunkova Claims Tight Opening Set

The championship showdown immediately lived up to expectations as both players displayed high-level shot-making and strong serving during a tightly contested opening set. Neither player managed to gain significant separation during the early exchanges, with long rallies and baseline battles becoming a consistent feature of the match. Eala showcased her trademark aggressive groundstrokes, while Bartunkova matched her pace with powerful counterattacking tennis.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 11th game when Bartunkova capitalized on a service lapse from Alex Eala to secure the first break of the match and move ahead 6-5. Serving for the set, the Czech fought off resistance from the Filipina and eventually converted her second set point to take the opener after more than an hour of action.

Bartunkova carried that momentum into the second set and immediately broke Eala’s serve in the opening game, placing the tournament top seed under significant pressure.

Alex Eala Takes Set Two

Faced with the prospect of falling further behind, Alex Eala delivered the response expected of a top seed. The 21-year-old broke back immediately to level the set at 1-1 and gradually began taking control of rallies through superior court positioning and precise shot placement. Instead of trying to overpower her opponent, the Filipina consistently moved the 20-year-old around the court with deep groundstrokes and sharp angles.

After a tense start to the set, Eala broke away from a 2-2 deadlock and surged to a commanding 5-2 advantage. Although Bartunkova managed to hold serve and delay the inevitable, Eala remained composed and served out the set, 6-3, to level the match.

Championship Drama in the Third Set

The final set produced the most dramatic tennis of the evening. Bartunkova briefly grabbed a 2-1 lead, but Alex Eala responded with some of her best tennis of the tournament. The Filipina escaped pressure on her own serve, erased a 0-30 deficit during a crucial game, and secured a pivotal break that helped her move ahead 4-2.

The Quezon City native appeared on course for a comfortable finish when she extended her advantage to 5-3 and moved within one game of the championship. However, Bartunkova refused to surrender. The Czech held serve to stay alive at 5-4 before breaking Eala to love in the following game, erasing the deficit and leveling the set at 5-5. Suddenly, the momentum had swung back to Bartunkova and the title was once again up for grabs.

Rather than allowing the comeback to affect her confidence, Eala produced a championship response. She attacked Bartunkova’s serve in the 11th game, raced to a 40-0 advantage, and secured another crucial break to reclaim the lead at 6-5.

Serving for the title for a second time, Eala faced one final challenge. Bartunkova generated three break-point opportunities and threatened to force the match even deeper into the night. The Filipina stood firm as Eala saved all three break points, forcing deuce before eventually earning championship point. Moments later, Bartunkova sent a shot long, ending the two-hour and 37-minute battle and sparking celebrations from the Birmingham crowd.

Historic Triumph Provides Momentum for Grass Season

The title run highlighted Alex Eala’s rapid adjustment to grass courts after her clay-court campaign ended at Roland Garros. The Rafa Nadal Academy alumna defeated Priscilla HonAlina CharaevaMananchaya Sawangkaew, Rebeka Masarova, and finally Bartunkova to claim the championship without facing a seeded player higher than fifth.

It was also a breakthrough result on a personal level, as the Filipina finally earned her first victory against a Czech opponent after entering the final with an 0-13 record against players from the Czech Republic.

Importantly, Alex Eala secured her second WTA 125 crown, earning valuable ranking points that are expected to push her near a career-high ranking. Now armed with a title from her first grass-court tournament of the 2026 season, the Filipina ace enters the rest of the grass-court swing with her confidence at an all-time high as she takes on tougher competition on the surface.
