Philippines Beat Uzbekistan, Earn Promotion to Billie Jean King Cup Group 1

Team Philippines is heading back to the top tier of Asian women’s tennis—and they earned every bit of it.

The Philippines defeated Uzbekistan 2-1 in the promotion playoff on Saturday to clinch promotion to Group I of the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania region for 2027, completing a campaign that had its moments of doubt but ended with the result that mattered most. Hong Kong also earned promotion on the same day, defeating Chinese Taipei in the other playoff match.

Tenny Madis Opens the Door

Inaugural National Women’s Open champion Tenny Madis delivered when the Philippines needed a fast start. The No. 1 singles player of the country came through in a tightly contested opener against Nigina Alimova, winning 6-4, 7-5 in a match that swung back and forth but never slipped away from the Filipino. It was the kind of composed, pressure-tested performance that sets the tone for a team format—and it did exactly that, giving the Philippines the first rubber and the early advantage.

Shaira Rivera’s Loss Sets Up a Decider

The second singles rubber did not go the Philippines’ way. Shaira Rivera dropped a competitive match against Sevil Yuldasheva 3-6, 5-7, levelling the tie at 1-1 and sending everything into the doubles. It was a setback, but not a fatal one—the Philippines had been in this position before during the week and knew exactly what to do.

Alexa Milliam and Rivera Close It Out

Alexa Joy Milliam—who had been one of the defining players of the entire Philippine campaign—stepped back onto the court alongside Rivera and delivered the promotion-clinching rubber. The pair beat Alimova and Yuldasheva 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 in a match that required genuine character when Uzbekistan levelled in the second set. The super tiebreak was where it was decided, and the Philippines handled it coolly, closing out 10-6 to seal the promotion and send the team into the next chapter.

What It Means

The road to Saturday’s result was not without turbulence. The Philippines went 2-1 against both Hong Kong and Singapore in Group A, dropped a 1-2 result to Pacific Oceania, and then swept Kyrgyzstan 3-0 to reach the promotion playoff. The group stage record was honest—good enough to advance, not so dominant as to suggest the promotion would be straightforward.

But that is what made Saturday’s win significant. The Philippines did not coast to Group I. They went through Hong Kong, Singapore, and Uzbekistan in a format that punishes inconsistency, and they came through. Madis was the anchor at the top of the singles order all week. Milliam was everywhere—singles, doubles, big moments—and delivered across the board. Rivera’s response after the singles loss to step up in the doubles decider was exactly the kind of team-first resilience that wins promotion playoffs.

Philippine women’s tennis has not always had a clear runway toward international relevance. Group I in 2027 is that runway—a chance to test themselves against Asia’s best programs and build something that outlasts a single good week.

The Philippines arrived at Group II with something to prove. They leave with a promotion.
