Alex Eala’s remarkable Berlin Tennis Open run finally came to an end after she lost a hard-fought battle against world No. 13 Linda Nosková, 6-2, 6-4, in semis action on Saturday.
Nosková Takes Set One After Rain Delay
After a rain delay that pushed the match back several hours, Nosková immediately seized control with her aggressive shot-making and dominant serve in the opening set.
The Czech star wasted little time asserting herself, breaking Eala early and using a barrage of winners and aces to dictate the pace of the opening set. Nosková’s precision from the baseline and ability to win quick points behind her serve proved too much for Eala to handle early on, as the Filipina struggled to find rhythm on return.
The 21-year-old fired five aces in the first set alone and wrapped up the opener after securing three service breaks.
Alex Eala Fights Back… But Not Enough
Despite the lopsided first set, Eala once again showed the resilience that fueled her breakthrough week in Berlin.
The second set saw a far more competitive battle. After falling behind 3-1, Eala dug deep and flipped the momentum with inspired tennis, winning three straight games to surge ahead, 4-3.
The Filipina began extending rallies more effectively, cutting down errors while pressuring Nosková into uncomfortable exchanges from the baseline.
For a moment, it looked like Eala might force a deciding set—but Nosková responded like a seasoned top-15 player.
Leaning once again on her powerful serve and clean ball-striking, the Czech regained control at the most crucial stretch of the match. She broke Eala at love in the pivotal ninth game before calmly serving out the contest to complete the straight-sets victory in just one hour and nine minutes.
Nosková finished with an impressive 33 winners and nine aces, once again extending Eala’s struggles against Czech opponents.
The victory also improved Nosková’s head-to-head record against the Filipina to 2-0, following her earlier win at Indian Wells this season.
Eala’s Memorable Berlin Debut
While the semis defeat ended Eala’s fairytale campaign, the 21-year-old leaves Berlin with her stock continuing to rise on the WTA Tour, considering this was her debut at the tournament.
After being granted wildcard entry, Eala produced one of the most memorable runs of her young career, defeating HSBC champion Donna Vekić before stunning two top-10 stars in consecutive matches—Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina—to reach the semifinals of a WTA 500 event for the first time in her career.
Her grass-court form has now firmly established her as one of the dangerous rising players heading into Wimbledon later this month, with a record of 9-2.
Alex Eala now shifts her focus to the Bad Homburg Open in Germany, where she continues her Wimbledon preparations in both singles and doubles competition.
