Alex Eala has yet again shocked the world after defeating world No. 8 Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 6-4, to advance into the semifinals of the Berlin Tennis Open. Fresh off her massive upset of world No. 2 Elena Rybakina just 24 hours earlier, Eala proved her breakthrough victory was no fluke.
Alex Eala Takes the First Set
Eala wasted no time asserting herself in the quarterfinal clash. Using aggressive returns and confident baseline shotmaking, the Filipina raced to a commanding 3-0 lead in the opening set after securing an early service break against the Ukrainian. Svitolina eventually settled into the match and fought back to trim the deficit to 4-3 after breaking Eala in the seventh game. But the momentum swing was short-lived. Unfazed by the veteran’s surge, Eala immediately broke back despite trailing 40-15 in the next game before calmly serving out the opener. Her efficient serving and disciplined shot selection proved crucial, as she kept her unforced errors low while consistently pressuring Svitolina’s second serve.
Filipina Ace Shows Maturity in Nerve-Wracking Second Set
The second set followed a similar pattern. Eala battled through a grueling 18-point opening game before earning another crucial break to seize a 2-0 advantage. Svitolina briefly clawed back to level at 2-2, but Eala once again responded like a seasoned veteran. The Filipina reeled off three straight games, highlighted by another service break in the seventh game, to build a commanding 5-2 lead and move within touching distance of the semifinals. To Svitolina’s credit, the 31-year-old mounted one final push, breaking Eala and holding serve to narrow the gap to 5-4.
But serving for the match for the second time, the 21-year-old showed remarkable composure under pressure. After falling behind 0-30 in the final game, the world No. 35 responded with fearless serving and clutch shotmaking, eventually sealing the straight-sets victory in one hour and 23 minutes. The win capped another outstanding display from the Filipina, who finished with strong serving numbers, sharp returns, and excellent control during long rallies. Her ability to neutralize Svitolina’s experience and counterpunching once again showcased the maturity of her rapidly evolving game.
Two Days, Two Wins vs. Top 10 Opponents
Alex Eala delivered another composed and fearless performance to collect her sixth career win over a Top 10 opponent and her second consecutive one in Berlin. HEr remarkable Berlin campaign now includes victories over Donna Vekic, Elena Rybakina, and now, Elina Svitolina.
What’s more impressive is that the Rafa Nadal Academy alumna hasn’t played a three-set battle yet in this tournament. In the semifinals, the Quezon City native will play against world No. 13 Linda Nosková, who previously defeated the Filipina earlier this season at Indian Wells. This time, however, Eala will enter the rematch playing the best grass-court tennis of her young career with a record of 9-1.
