On Saturday, Alex Eala defeated world No. 10 Elina Svitolina for the second time this season, 6-3, 6-4, to book a place in the semifinals of the 2026 Mubadala DC Open in Washington, D.C.
Fresh off victories over Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen and defending champion Leylah Fernandez, the 21-year-old Filipina once again showcased her composure under pressure, overcoming another stern challenge to earn her sixth victory over a top 10 player this season.
The win sends the world No. 28 into her second WTA 500 semifinal of the year, where she will face four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in a blockbuster first-ever meeting.
Alex Eala Holds Firm After Tight Opening Set
The opening set was anything but straightforward, with both players exchanging service breaks in the early stages.
Alex Eala struck first, converting her second break point in a marathon opening game before Svitolina immediately responded to level the match. The two continued trading breaks until the Filipina finally steadied her serve, holding comfortably for a 4-2 advantage.
The Ukrainian cut the deficit to 4-3 and looked ready to seize momentum after racing to a 0-40 lead on Eala’s serve. However, the Filipina showed remarkable resilience, saving all three break points before escaping with one of the biggest holds of the match to move ahead 5-3.
That momentum proved decisive, as Eala broke Svitolina once more in the following game to wrap up the opening set after 43 minutes.
Eala Rallies Again After Early Second-Set Deficit
The 31-year-old Ukrainian responded strongly in the second set, earning an early break and building a 3-1 advantage as she attempted to force a decider.
But just as she had done in her comeback win over Leylah Fernandez a day earlier, the Filipina refused to panic.
The World No. 28 gradually turned the tide, stringing together three consecutive games to seize a 4-3 lead. Although the World No. 10 managed to level the score at 4-4, Eala stayed composed in the closing stretch.
The two-time WTA 125 champion held serve for a 5-4 advantage before earning another crucial break in the final game to seal the victory after one hour and 34 minutes.
Naomi Osaka Awaits as Eala Continues DC Open Run
The latest victory further strengthens Eala’s growing reputation as one of the WTA Tour’s brightest young stars.
The win also improved her head-to-head record against Svitolina to 2-0, after defeating the Ukrainian by the same scoreline in the Berlin Open quarterfinals in June.
Standing between the Filipina sensation and another career milestone is former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, who advanced to the semifinals after defeating Elisabetta Cocciaretto, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Their upcoming clash will mark the first meeting between two of the tour’s most exciting Asian players, with a place in the Mubalada DC Open final at stake.
