The championship match was anything but straightforward. Originally scheduled to conclude on Monday (Washington time), the final was interrupted twice by heavy rain and lightning before being suspended with Jessica Pegula leading by a set and Alex Eala holding a slim 2-1 advantage in the second.
Before the weather interruption, Pegula had recovered brilliantly from trailing 3-4 in the opening set. The American erased two break points at 4-3 before stringing together three consecutive games to steal the opener, 6-4.
When play resumed nearly a day later, Eala returned with renewed confidence. Both players exchanged holds before the crucial stages of the second set. With the score tied at 4-4, the Filipina delivered one of her biggest service games of the tournament, holding to love for a 5-4 lead before capitalizing on a string of Pegula errors to break serve and force a deciding set.
Instead of another tightly contested battle, the third set turned into a masterclass from Eala. Displaying fearless shot-making, exceptional court coverage, and aggressive returning, the Filipina completely overwhelmed the World No. 3. She won six consecutive games in the deciding set, allowing Pegula no opportunity to recover as she completed the emphatic 6-0 shutout.
After resuming play trailing in the match, Eala remarkably won the final eight games to complete one of the greatest comebacks of her career.
Historic WTA 500 Title Caps Eala’s Dream Mubadala DC Open Campaign
The 21-year-old Filipina became the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour singles championship, completing a remarkable week—Eala’s championship run was nothing short of extraordinary.
She opened her campaign by rallying past reigning Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen before eliminating defending champion Leylah Fernandez despite trailing 1-5 in the second set. The Filipina then defeated second seed Elina Svitolina for the second time this season before overpowering former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka in straight sets to reach her first WTA 500 final.
She saved her best performance for last, defeating Pegula to finally capture the biggest title of her career after finishing runner-up in Eastbourne a year earlier.
The victory also improved Eala’s record against Top 10 opponents to an outstanding 9-4 overall, including five consecutive victories over Top 10 players. Her Washington triumph is expected to propel her into the Top 20 of the WTA Rankings for the first time.
