Alex Eala came agonizingly close to avenging her recent defeat to Diana Shnaider but ultimately bowed out of the 2026 WTA 500 Toray Pan Pacific Open after absorbing a 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 loss in the quarterfinals on Friday evening.
The Filipina quickly found her rhythm and responded with an outstanding stretch of tennis, winning five consecutive games to establish a commanding 5-1 advantage.
Her aggressive baseline play and well-placed winners repeatedly put the world No. 13 under pressure, while her strong service games prevented the Russian from mounting an immediate response.
Shnaider managed to stop Eala’s run by claiming the seventh game, but the Filipina remained composed and eventually served out the opening set, 6-2, putting herself in a favorable position to secure a place in the semifinals.
Diana Shnaider Forces Tiebreak
The second set, however, developed into a much tighter contest as both players became increasingly effective in protecting their respective service games.
The eighth-seeded Filipina continued to create opportunities against Shnaider, but the Russian repeatedly managed to escape difficult situations and prevent the Filipina from establishing another significant advantage.
The pressure intensified during the ninth game when Eala faced multiple break points but displayed tremendous composure to save them and eventually secure a 5-4 lead.
Neither player managed to break serve throughout the 12 games, sending the match into a deciding tiebreak. Just when the Filipina appeared capable of completing another comeback, a costly double fault handed the Russian a set point. Shnaider capitalized on the opportunity and won the following point to take the tiebreak, 7-5, leveling the match at one set apiece.
Eala Battles Ankle Issue as Shnaider Completes Comeback
Both players initially exchanged service holds before the Russian found her breakthrough in the third game, securing the first break of the deciding set and taking a 2-1 lead.
Shnaider followed it up with another successful service game, eventually building a 3-1 advantage as she began dictating the exchanges.
Eala managed to stay within striking distance, but her efforts were further complicated when she requested a medical timeout midway through the set to have her ankle examined.
Despite receiving medical attention, the Filipina returned to the court and continued fighting for every point, refusing to let the physical setback end her campaign without a final push.
Shnaider, however, maintained her composure and protected her advantage as the match entered its closing stages. The 22-year-old Russian delivered when it mattered most, winning three consecutive points in the final game and sealing the victory with an ace to complete the 6-4 deciding-set triumph.
Eala Now Focuses on Hong Kong Open
The result marked Eala’s second consecutive defeat to the Russian, who had also eliminated her in the Round of 16 of the Ningbo Open. Before being eliminated, the Rafa Nadal Academy graduate defeated Mika Stojsavljevic and Talia Gibson.
She will now turn her attention to the WTA 250 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open, which is scheduled to serve as her final tournament appearance of the season.
