Alex Eala’s campaign at the 2026 WTA 500 BNB Ningbo Open came to an end after she suffered a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 defeat to sixth-seeded Diana Shnaider of Russia in the Round of 16 on Thursday evening.
Eala and Shnaider traded service holds early in the match, with neither player able to establish a decisive advantage through the first eight games.
The Russian, currently ranked world No. 13, eventually broke Eala’s serve in the ninth game to move ahead, 5-4, and put herself in position to close out the opening set.
However, the Filipina responded with a crucial break of her own, leveling the score at 5-all and keeping the contest alive.
Shnaider regained the advantage in the following game by breaking Eala again before holding serve to claim the opening set, 7-5, after 51 minutes of play.
Although Eala managed to extend the set, she could not prevent the Russian from capitalizing on the decisive opportunities late in the frame.
