Despite the Quezon Huskers’ intense drive to win game 3, the Pampanga Giant Lanterns still reigned and swept the best-of-five finals series right in front of the roaring home crowd inside the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center on Saturday, capturing their second MBPL championship in two years.

Quezon, who received a tough beating in games 1 and 2 after two complete blowouts, tried to redeem themselves in game 3. The Southern titlists put up a great fight, but the defending champs still won, 65-61, making the Giant Lanterns the first-ever back-to-back champs.

Baltazar Proves Why He’s the MVP

As expected from Justine Baltazar, who was just named back-to-back MVP earlier, was dominant against Quezon. Balti posted a 19-point, 20-rebound double-double, showing his presence in the paint. Helped by Jaymo Eguilos’ tenacious 15 rebounds, Pampanga once again dominates the boards, 53-46.

Top guns Archie Concepcion and Encho Serrano also contributed on offense. Concepcion rallied with 19 points including the crucial free throws in the final seconds to seal the deal. Serrano, who was suspended in game 2, gave 15 points, 3 assists, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal as the main guy on the backcourt.

Meanwhile, Quezon’s Judel Ric Fuentes and rookie sensation LJ Gonzales took charge, but their efforts couldn’t keep their hopes alive. Fuentes, despite poor shooting throughout their whole playoff run, came alive in game 3, finishing with 21 points while Gonzales chipped in with 18 points

Pampanga Still Undefeated in the MPBL Playoffs

The Giant Lanterns are undefeated in the playoffs since 2023. Moreover, the 2-time champs haven’t lost a home game since November 2022, extending their home win streak to 33.

We are yet to see what’s next for Pampanga, with Baltazar’s much-awaited debut in the Philippine Basketball Association under the Converge FiberXers.
