The Titan Ultra Giant Risers started off strong on their way to a 132-128 victory over the Macau Giant Pandas on Tuesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Titan Ultra’s win, its second in seven games, was marred by a bad fall from rookie big Mark Omega, who had to be stretchered off the court and brought to the hospital. The loss is Macau’s fifth in its PBA Governors’ Cup, putting them in danger of missing the playoffs for a second straight conference.
What Happened?
Titan Ultra stormed out of the gate, firing seven triples in a 47-29 opening frame. The Giant Risers continued their hot shooting in the second quarter, adding 33 more points to Macau’s 31 for an 80-60 cushion entering halftime.
Macau cut into that lead somewhat with a 33-28 third canto that saw De’Vondre Perry puncture the hoop for 15 points and Jeffrey Ma provide an early spark with eight quick points after halftime.
The final frame, however, started ominously, with Omega suffering a bad fall after going for a rebound. The rookie big man was eventually stretchered off the court and taken to a nearby hospital. The incident seemed to take the wind out of the Giant Risers, who were outscored, 28-20, in the next 10 minutes as the Giant Pandas crept to within 130-124 with 1:37 remaining. Titan Ultra, though, hung on for the win.
Who Stood Out?
Tirrell Brown continued his superb play for Titan Ultra this conference, tallying a team-high 36 points with 10 rebounds and 7 assists in an all-game show of force. Munzon finished with 18 after that fiery first quarter while also adding 6 boards and 5 dimes. Roi Sumang and Bryan Sajonia provided a spark off the bench, firing 14 and 13, respectively.
Macau, on the other hand, leaned on a superstar effort from Perry, who led all scorers with 45 points on an efficient 16-for-27 clip. He also had 14 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Ramon Cao notched a 24-point, 12-rebound double-double to back Perry up, while Ma and Damian Chong Qui added 18 apiece.
3 Keys to the Game
- Three-point shooting. Rensy Bajar wants his team firing away from deep, and on Tuesday, the trey ball was falling for Titan Ultra as they hit 13 of their 32 attempts for a 40.6% clip. Macau, on the other hand, was just 8-for-27 for 29.6%.
- Bench play. Despite Munzon and Brown combining for 54 points, the Giant Risers’ starters were outscored, 112-75, by their Giant Pandas counterparts. Titan Ultra’s bench, though, more than made up for that gap as it rifled in 57 big points as opposed to just 16 from the Macau reserves.
- Hot start. Macau played Titan Ultra even in the middle quarters and won the final quarter. However, that couldn’t make up for the early lead that the Giant Risers built.
