As arguably the biggest offseason in league history comes to a close, the NBA has given fans a sneak peek at the 2026–27 season schedule, releasing the slates for opening week and Christmas Day on Tuesday.

With multiple stars set to don new colors this year, the league ensured that one of the biggest icons in sports will headline opening day, as LeBron James is set to play his first game with the Philadelphia 76ers on October 20.

In fitting fashion, The King will face none other than the defending champion New York Knicks, who will raise their first championship banner in 54 years.

Celtics, Pistons Kickstart First NBA Opening Day Tripleheader in 15 Years

The new NBA season will already be historic from the jump, as opening day will feature three games, starting with Eastern Conference powerhouses Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons.

Both teams will showcase fresh faces to begin their campaigns. Jayson Tatum and the Celtics will look to new star Paul George to bolster their NBA title bid, alongside reigning champion big man Mitchell Robinson and veteran leader Mike Conley.

Meanwhile, the Pistons aim to continue their rise with star guard Cade Cunningham, supported by defensive-minded additions such as John Collins and Isaiah Joe.

The last time the league scheduled three games for opening day was in the 201112 campaign, which began on Christmas Day with five matchups following the infamous NBA lockout.

LeBron and New-Look Sixers Look to Spoil New York’s Ring Night

Entering the new NBA season, the Sixers are considered one of the favorites to win not only the East but the title as well. And there’s no better opponent to test that claim than the defending champions.

Alongside James, Philadelphia also acquired another former Finals MVP in Jaylen Brown, as both stars aim to ignite the Sixers’ already potent offense.

With the defensive presence of franchise big Joel Embiid, plus young offensive sparks Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, the Sixers will look to make their case as title contenders from game one.

The Knicks, however, will look to remind the league why they sit atop basketball’s mountain.

New York’s offseason was relatively quiet. After losing Robinson to the Celtics, the Knicks quickly addressed their interior defense by signing veteran center Andre Drummond and re-signing key role players Jordan Clarkson, Landry Shamet, and Jose Alvarado.

With the core of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and OG Anunoby intact, the blue-and-white remain poised for a potential title repeat.

Wemby and Spurs Visit SGA and Thunder in WCF Rematch

Closing out opening day is another clash between title contenders, as the San Antonio Spurs face the Oklahoma City Thunder in a Western Conference Finals rematch.

Following a grueling Finals loss, the Spurs reloaded in the offseason by signing veteran forward Tobias Harris to spark their offense, while also re-signing key players Harrison Barnes and Jordan McLaughlin.

Meanwhile, the Thunder suffered a major blow after parting ways with lockdown defenders Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins, and Isaiah Joe to free up cap space. However, they made headlines in the draft by selecting 7-foot-3 big man Aday Mara with the 12th overall pick.

With league superstars Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander still leading their respective clubs, opening day of the 2027 NBA campaign promises to be nothing short of spectacular.
