Cavs Fortify Roster for Title Bid, Land Peyton Watson in Sign-and-Trade with Nuggets

After an embarrassing end to their 2025–26 NBA campaign following a sweep by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Cleveland Cavaliers have finally found the piece to bolster their defense, landing forward Peyton Watson through a sign-and-trade deal.

The Cavs, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, and Washington Wizards round up the four-team deal that sends Watson and Cam Whitmore to Cleveland, and Max Strus to LA. Meanwhile, the Nuggets acquire a 2031 first-round pick and a 2032 second-round pick, while the Wizards also secure the services of Tre Mann, a 2027 second-round pick, and cash considerations.

After missing out on a reunion with then free agent LeBron James, as well as losing key players such as Dean Wade, Keon Ellis, and Dennis Schroder, the wine-and-gold finally struck out on a rising forward to fortify their wing defense.

Peyton Watson Could Be Cavs’ Wing of the Future

Cleveland made sure that their acquisition of Watson was for the long run, as the 6-foot-8 forward also inked a four-year, $88 million deal with the Ohio-based squad.

Initially drafted in 2022 with the 30th overall pick, Watson had his breakout year this past season with Denver, collecting averages of 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists, ushering the Nuggets to a playoff appearance, where they were eventually bounced out in six games by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

However, injuries heavily derailed Watson’s 2026 campaign, ultimately appearing in only 54 games while starting in 40. The forward also missed the entirety of the playoffs due to a reaggravated hamstring strain.

Cavs Nearing Completed Roster

After securing the services of Peyton Watson, one final decision looms in the Cleveland front office—re-signing star playmaker James Harden.

The Beard initially declined out of his $42.3 million contract to give the Cavs financial flexibility throughout the summer. With training camp set to begin in the following weeks, reports indicate that the Cavs and Harden are now in constant talks to construct a new, multi-year deal with the veteran guard.

With Harden and Donovan Mitchell anchoring the Cleveland scoring, the trio of Peyton Watson, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen will have no problems catching lobs all season long, as another hunt for the NBA title begins for Cleveland.
