After two years with the Dallas Mavericks, Klay Thompson is on the move again for another shot at an NBA title, as he intends to sign with the Miami Heat following a contract buyout.
Following a disastrous 2026 season that saw Dallas finish 12th in the Western Conference, Thompson’s addition to the Florida-based squad gives Miami more firepower for another championship bid.
Mavericks team president Masai Ujiri commended Thompson’s contributions in his short stint in Dallas and sent his best regards to the 6-foot-7 forward as he moves to the East for the first time in his career.
“Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he’s brought to the Mavericks organization… We wish him nothing but the best moving forward,” Ujiri said in a statement.
Heat Add One of the Greatest Shooters in Basketball
Despite a dip in performance during his time in Dallas, Klay Thompson remains one of the deadliest shooters in basketball and continues to put up productive numbers in his 13th season.
This past season, Thompson logged 69 games for the Mavs but started in only 8. Despite limited minutes, the Splash Brother still averaged 11.7 points and 2.1 rebounds while shooting 39.3% from the field.
Thompson’s arrival unlocks more offense in Miami, as he is expected to serve as an elite floor spacer alongside the inside presence of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
With defensive stalwarts Davion Mitchell and Andrew Wiggins, the Heat remain one of the biggest contenders for the title this season, and Klay Thompson’s addition is poised to give the East a serious challenge.
