Alex Eala’s final tune‑up before the US Open women’s singles main draw ended in defeat, as close friend Iva Jovic prevailed, 6‑3, in the Stars of the Open exhibition match at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The one‑set exhibition in New York gave both rising stars a chance to experience the atmosphere of the world’s largest tennis stadium before their campaigns begin. A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit the USTA Foundation.
Iva Jovic Takes Early Control
Jovic seized the early advantage by winning the first two games for a 2‑0 lead. Alex Eala responded to level the match at 2‑all, and the two traded games in front of a lively crowd. The Filipina again pulled even at 3‑3 before Jovic shifted gears to move ahead, 5‑3.
A Match Filled With Fun Moments
Although competitive, the exhibition carried a lighter tone. After the third game, a young player from the Harlem Jr. Tennis & Education Program joined them on court, adding a memorable touch.
Later, during a changeover, Eala and Jovic revealed a surprise for the fans. With Jovic leading 5‑3, both invited their fathers onto the court for an improvised doubles point. Jovic’s father served, while Eala’s father, Mike, took the return. The playful rally drew laughter and hugs, with Eala eventually stepping in to extend the exchange.
Enjoying the Arthur Ashe Atmosphere
Iva Jovic closed out the exhibition in the next game, sealing the 6‑3 win after 54 minutes. Despite the result, Alex Eala valued the experience as preparation for the intensity of the US Open.
“It’s been amazing. The stadium is packed, so electric,” Eala said during a mid‑match interview.
The 21‑year‑old added: “It’s a great way to practice against a great opponent. Amazing court and it really gets the atmosphere of the match. I think with the way I approach these things is that I really focus on myself. It’s a good exercise to kind of switch back and forth to have fun and really lock in.”
Alex Eala Turns Her Attention to the US Open
With the exhibition behind her, Alex Eala now shifts focus to the tournament proper. She enters the US Open women’s singles main draw as the No. 17 seed and will face a qualifier in the opening round.
Jovic, seeded No. 14, begins against Magdalena Fręch.
While Jovic claimed another win over her close friend, Eala nonetheless gained valuable experience under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium—an experience that could prove crucial when the stakes rise at the season’s final Grand Slam.
