The Ateneo Blue Eagles opened their UAAP Season 89 Men’s Basketball Tournament campaign with a statement, trouncing the UE Red Warriors, 101‑74, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Despite the emotional circumstances surrounding their season opener, the Blue Eagles came out firing, taking a commanding 56‑39 lead into halftime behind highly touted rookie Kieffer Alas, who scored 19 points in the first two quarters.

Ateneo continued to pull away in the third quarter before putting the game out of reach in the final frame, cruising to a 27‑point victory.

“Coach Louie wanted to thank everyone—the UAAP, especially God—for allowing us to play in spite of the tragedy that happened to us; we’re still allowed to play the game that we love. Thank you sa families, sa Ateneo for supporting us,” said Blue Eagles assistant coach RJ Jazul, as interim coach Louie Alas had already lost his voice after the game.

The younger Alas finished his collegiate debut with 24 points and four rebounds, while team captain Jared Bahay added 17 points. Grayson Rogers chipped in 12 markers.

For the Red Warriors, Tope Lagat led the team with 15 points, while big man JM Edoukou contributed 14 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Cole Cruz‑Dumont also finished with 14 points.

The Blue Eagles will take on the UP Fighting Maroons on Saturday, September 19, at 5:30 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Earlier that day, the Red Warriors will face the NU Bulldogs at 3:00 p.m.
