Ateneo MBT Tragedy: What We Know So Far About the Deaths of Rene Baterbonia, Divine Adili

Tragedy struck the Filipino basketball community on Monday afternoon after two student-athletes, Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, of the Ateneo Blue Eagles died tragically. Baterbonia, a rising star out of Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, was only 19, while Adili, a foreign student-athlete, was just 21.

What We Know So Far About the Tragedy

Details are still emerging about the tragedy that befell Baterbonia and Adili, and here’s what we know so far:

Who Are Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili?

Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili were promising student-athletes for the Ateneo de Manila University Men’s Basketball Team. Baterbonia was an incoming 6-foot-4 rookie recruit who had recently shot to national prominence as the MVP of the 2025 Palarong Pambansa, where he led the Davao Region to a historic championship. Adili, 21, was a 6-foot-10 Nigerian foreign student-athlete and center who had already established himself as a key, high-hustle contributor and the team’s fourth-leading scorer in UAAP Season 88. Both young men were highly regarded figures within the Blue Eagles program, representing the bright future of the university’s basketball rebuilding efforts.

Cause of Death

According to a statement from Ateneo itself, the two student-athletes died due to a “drowning incident” that occurred during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on the afternoon of June 8, 2026. Police Regional Office 3 later confirmed this, noting how personnel from the Dipaculao Municipal Police Station received information about the incident and responded accordingly while coordinating with relevant agencies for help. Baterbonia and Adili, according to the police, were brought to a nearby medical facility but were declared deceased.

Why Were the Blue Eagles in Aurora?

As mentioned by the university itself through its statement, the Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team was in Dipaculao, Aurora for a team-building activity, which is not unusual in itself. However, interviews with former Ateneo players who have played under current coach Tab Baldwin have resurfaced online, and these interviews paint a slightly more disturbing picture of what possibly goes on in such activities. Among other things, players like Shaun Ildefonso, Gian Mamuyac, and Tyler Tio have described boot camp-like environments in these team buildings, with another player, supposedly Gideon “Gboy” Babilonia, nearly drowning himself.

What Happens Next?

Ateneo, in its statement, offered sympathies to the bereaved families and asked for prayers for the two student-athletes. The university also said it is offering support to Baterbonia’s and Adili’s families and is finalizing funeral and wake arrangements in consultation with the families. However, Ateneo did not mention anything about conducting a probe into the incident or taking accountability. Even so, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has apparently gotten involved, announcing via a statement that it is convening a multi-stakeholder body to investigate the matter.

PSC Set to Intervene

According to the PSC, it is working with relevant agencies in ongoing probes into the incident and will seek to strengthen safeguards in athletic training environments, ostensibly to avoid a repeat of this tragedy.

“As the government agency mandated to provide leadership and direction in sports development and athlete welfare, the PSC is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigations and is convening a sports stakeholders’ panel to support the efforts of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Justice (DOJ)—with the objective of establishing a clear, accurate, and comprehensive understanding of the events that transpired,” the PSC said in its statement. “Beyond fact-finding, this multi-stakeholder body—which includes the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the National Youth Commission (NYC)—will examine existing policies, protocols, and training practices toward resolutions to strengthen safeguards in athletic training environments.”

As of this writing, however, there is no clear timetable as to when these ongoing investigations will be completed. But one thing is clear: what happened to Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili was a tragedy. Whether it was a preventable one is anyone’s guess.
