The Philippine Women’s National Football Team (PWNFT) absorbed a 4‑0 defeat to defending champions Japan in their quarterfinal clash on Friday in women’s football at the 20th Asian Games. With the loss, the Filipinas’ came ended in heartbreak.
Japan immediately put the Philippines under pressure and found the breakthrough just two minutes into the match. Saori Takarada capitalized on a rebound after Olivia McDaniel initially saved Yuki Seno’s header from a corner, giving the Nadeshiko an early advantage.
The Filipinas struggled to contain Japan’s attacking pressure as the hosts dictated the opening half. Ranked No. 5 in the world, Japan had already dominated the group stage with wins over Thailand, Vietnam, and Chinese Taipei, scoring 16 goals without conceding.
Japan Adds Three More Before Halftime
Japan doubled its advantage in the 26th minute through Mami Ueno, who converted Yuzuho Shiokoshi’s corner with a right‑footed finish.
The hosts continued to exploit openings in the Philippine defense, and Takarada completed her brace 10 minutes later. The Japanese forward pounced on a loose ball after Jackie Sawicki blocked an attempt and Camryn Penn tried to clear it, making it 3‑0.
The Filipinas were unable to stop Japan from adding another goal before the halftime whistle. Chiina Kamiya headed the ball into the net in first‑half stoppage time following another corner, sending Japan into the break with a commanding 4‑0 lead.
Filipinas Respond With Stronger Second Half
Despite the difficult opening 45 minutes, the Filipinas showed greater defensive organization after the restart and prevented Japan from adding to its advantage.
McDaniel continued to make important saves while the Philippines also began creating opportunities of their own. Jourdyn Curran came close with a header, while Mallie Ramirez tested Japan goalkeeper Shu Ohba in the 79th minute after receiving Katrina Guillou’s free kick. Ohba comfortably collected Ramirez’s effort.
The Filipinas ultimately could not find a breakthrough, but their improved second‑half showing kept Japan scoreless for the entire period.
Filipinas End Campaign With Another Quarterfinal Appearance
The 4‑0 defeat ended the Philippines’ pursuit of a medal, but the Filipinas still secured their second consecutive Asian Games quarterfinal appearance.
The result also represented an improvement from their previous encounters with Japan at major tournaments. The Filipinas lost 8‑1 to the Nadeshiko in the 2022 Asian Games quarterfinals.
The Philippines finished the 2026 Asian Games with one victory, one draw, and two defeats. They opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Uzbekistan before defeating Hong Kong 2-0. They then fell 5-1 to China in their final group-stage match before advancing to the quarterfinals as one of the best third-place teams.
With their Asian Games campaign now complete, the Filipinas will shift their attention toward preparations for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
