The Philippine Women’s National Football Team (PWNFT) secured its first victory at the 20th Asian Games after defeating Hong Kong, 2‑0, on Thursday evening at the Gifu Nagaragawa Stadium in Japan. Despite opening their campaign with a draw against Uzbekistan, the Filipinas now have a legitimate shot at making it to the next round.
The Filipinas wasted little time taking control as Skye Leach opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Inday Tolentin’s header was initially denied after deflecting off Hong Kong defender Pak Tung Tsang, but the loose ball fell to Leach, who calmly finished from inside the box.
The goal marked Leach’s first for the national team in only her second international appearance after joining the squad through the June 2026 San Diego talent identification camp.
Hong Kong attempted to respond, with Leung Hong Kiu Anke coming close in the 28th minute when her effort struck the post. However, Olivia McDaniel and the Philippine backline remained composed to preserve the 1‑0 advantage at halftime.
The Philippines found itself under more pressure after the restart as Hong Kong pushed for an equalizer. McDaniel and team captain Hali Long were among those who helped keep the Filipinas’ defense intact as Hong Kong repeatedly tested the backline. Despite the increased pressure, the Philippines remained dangerous whenever it moved forward.
Head coach Mark Torcaso then introduced Megan Murray, whose fresh legs proved crucial in extending the Filipinas’ advantage.
Mallie Ramirez Makes It 2‑0 for the Philippines
The Philippines restored control in the 63rd minute through Mallie Ramirez. Murray created the opportunity after working her way down the right flank before sending a well‑timed cross into the box. Ramirez met the delivery and fired the ball past the Hong Kong goalkeeper from a tight angle to make it 2‑0.
Hong Kong continued searching for a breakthrough, but the Filipinas refused to surrender their clean sheet. McDaniel made another important save late in the match, including a stop on Cheung Wai Ki’s effort in the 87th minute.
“Any goal I get to score for this national team, it’s special every time. Being able to score in such a crucial game is a cool experience for me,” Ramirez said after the match.
Filipinas Strengthen Quarterfinal Bid in Asiad
The victory moved the Philippines to four points in Group G, with the Filipinas now sitting second behind China, who also have four points but hold the superior goal difference.
The result also produced notable milestones, as Jackie Sawicki earned her 50th international cap, while Hali Long reached 108 appearances for the Philippines—tying men’s football legend Phil Younghusband for the most international caps in Philippine football history.
“I think [the] quarterfinals are pretty much locked in, we just need to wait and see after the final match of where we finish on the table,” head coach Mark Torcaso said.
The Filipinas will close the group stage in a must‑win match against China on September 21 at 3 p.m.
