The Philippine Men’s National Football Team (PMNFT) began its inaugural 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign with a narrow 1‑0 defeat to Vietnam at the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, Indonesia, on Saturday evening.
Despite entering the match as underdogs against the reigning two‑time ASEAN champions, the Philippines showed confidence from the opening whistle and created several opportunities. Andre Leipold forced an early save in the sixth minute after receiving a pass from Randy Schneider, while Bjorn Kristensen headed just wide six minutes later. Manny Ott also had an effort blocked in the 20th minute. Schneider then came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 23rd minute when his long‑range attempt crashed against the crossbar.
Vietnam Breaks the Deadlock Before Halftime
The Philippines’ missed opportunity proved costly just two minutes later. Vietnam quickly moved forward, with Williams Minh Hoang providing a cross for Nguyen Dinh Bac, who finished past Philippine goalkeeper Kevin Ray Mendoza in the 25th minute to give Vietnam a 1‑0 advantage.
The Philippines continued searching for an equalizer after halftime. Kristensen and Nguyen exchanged attempts, while Schneider saw another effort blocked in the 62nd minute. Aguinaldo also narrowly missed a header from a Schneider corner shortly afterward. Vietnam suffered a setback when captain Nguyen Xuan Son was forced off with a hamstring injury around the hour mark.
PMNFT’s Fightback Falls Short
The PMNFT continued applying pressure late in the match. Jesper Nyholm made an important defensive intervention in the 64th minute before receiving a red card in the 74th minute. However, the decision was overturned following a VAR review.
The Filipinos appeared to have finally found their equalizer in the 83rd minute when Kenji Nishioka converted Sandro Reyes’ pass. VAR, however, ruled Nishioka offside and canceled the goal. The Philippines continued pushing forward, but Vietnam goalkeeper Le Giang Patrik denied Sebastian Rasmussen’s stoppage‑time header to preserve the lead.
Philippines Looking to Bounce Back Against Pakistan
The Philippines will look to bounce back against Pakistan on Tuesday, September 29, at the same venue.
The team that finishes at the top of Group B will secure a spot in the title match, where it will take on the winner of Group A. On the other hand, the runners‑up from both groups will face each other for the bronze medal.
Joining the Philippines in Group B are Pakistan, Vietnam, and Thailand. Group A consists of Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Bangladesh.
