Alex Eala’s campaign at the 2026 WTA 500 BNB Ningbo Open came to an end after she suffered a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 defeat to sixth-seeded Diana Shnaider of Russia in the Round of 16 on Thursday evening.

Eala and Shnaider traded service holds early in the match, with neither player able to establish a decisive advantage through the first eight games.

The Russian, currently ranked world No. 13, eventually broke Eala’s serve in the ninth game to move ahead, 5-4, and put herself in position to close out the opening set.

However, the Filipina responded with a crucial break of her own, leveling the score at 5-all and keeping the contest alive.

Shnaider regained the advantage in the following game by breaking Eala again before holding serve to claim the opening set, 7-5, after 51 minutes of play.

Although Eala managed to extend the set, she could not prevent the Russian from capitalizing on the decisive opportunities late in the frame.

The second set developed into another tightly contested battle, with both players exchanging service breaks during the opening six games.

After the score reached 3-3, Eala finally held serve to take a 4-3 lead, briefly putting pressure on the sixth seed.

Shnaider, however, responded by winning her next service game to restore parity at 4-all. The Russian then broke Eala’s serve in the ninth game to move ahead, 5-4, earning the opportunity to serve for the match.

Despite the setback, Eala continued to fight, forcing Shnaider into a lengthy final game after falling behind 40-15. The Filipina saved match points and repeatedly extended the game through deuce, but Shnaider eventually found a way to close out the 6-4 second set.
