Continuing the action for Week 4 of Women’s Maharlika Basketball League. From February 12 – 16, which teams are now on the top of the standings and which ones are still having a hard time getting a win?

WEEK 4: Lady Sailors go 4-1, Skyrisers improve to 3-0, Aguilas and Valkyries go 3-1

A dominant Week 4 for these 3 teams. Last February 12, the New Zealand Bluefire Valkyries won against the CEU Lady Scorpions, 91 to 48. Anna Alicia Castillo led the Valkyries as she had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. This massive win helps improve their team to 3 wins and 1 loss. The second game of that day was the Philippine Navy Lady Sailors winning big time versus the Solar Home Suns with a final score of 94 – 46. A lot of players stood out in this game but Afril Bernadino had to lead her team. She had 19 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 7 steals making a strong case to be the MVP of the tournament. Gemma Miranda had 14 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. Janelle Mendoza also had a great game with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

On February 16, the Galeries Tower Skyrisers came out victorious against the PSP Lady Gymers with a score of 74 – 39. Ambie Almazan had a double double performance of 11 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Anna Buendia also scored double figures with 13 points and Princess Fabruada with 11 points. Pilipinas Aguilas also came out victorious against the EZ Jersey Relentless, 113 to 55. A lot of players contributed for a dominant win. Alexis Pana had a double double performance of 11 points and 11 rebounds along with 8 assists. Chack Cabinbin also had 12 points, 8 assists and 4 steals. Elain Etang tallied a team high 14 points.

The Lady Sailors won their 2nd game of the week against the FEU Lady Tamaraws. Afril Bernardino had a phenomenal game again with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and an astonishing 7 blocks. Gemma Miranda also had a stellar game of 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Lastly, Janelle Mendoza had a double double performance to improve their team’s record to 4-1.

WEEK 4: Lady Scorpions, Lady Patriots, Lady Magdalo and Lady Tamaraws go 1-2

The “Battle of Cavite” was a game heavily anticipated by fans with the Cavite ‘Tol Patriots coming out victorious against the Imus Lady Magdalo. Luisa San Juan had a league high 28 points along with 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals. Chairmaine Natural had 14 points and 8 rebounds while Bernice Paraiso had 11 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals for the Lady Patriots with a 87 – 48 win. Nel Flor shined for the Lady Magdalo as she had 13 points and Khaterine Cantimbuhan with 11 points. Both of the Cavite based teams improved their record of 1 win and 2 losses.

The FEU Lady Tamaraws also bowed down against the Lady Sailors. Amyah Espanol had 17 points and 10 rebounds while Shane Salavani had 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in a losing effort.

WEEK 4: Gymers, EZ and Suns still searching for a W

Perhaps frustration has got into the system of these teams as in all of their losses, it’s been a blowout. The Suns lost versus the Lady Sailors with only Patricia Rodas having a good game as she tallied 13 points and 8 rebounds. EZ Jersey Relentless also had a disappointing loss against the Aguilas. Tin Capilit with 18 points and Loraine Gonzalo had 12 points in a loss. Both of these squads fell to 0-3 record.

The Lady Gymers on the other hand have also fallen into a deeper hole as they have 0 wins and 4 losses already. Against the Skyrisers, Fatima Quiapo had a decent game of 10 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds. Jeedel Bartolo had 9 points but she was 1/7 from the 3 point range and these performances aren’t enough to get a W.

It’s a long tournament, yes, but you want to at least get wins as early as possible.

The Week 5 action of WMPBL continues on February 19, 2025 (Wednesday). Game 1 features New Zealand Bluefires Valkyries versus the FEU Lady Tamaraws at 4:00 PM. Game 2 is a battle of colleges as CEU Lady Scorpions plays the UST Growling Tigresses at 6:00 PM. Game 3 features the San Juan Lady Knights going up against Cavite ‘Tol Patriots at 8:00 PM.
