UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball BY THE NUMBERS: NU Defeats La Salle to Stay Perfect

The defending champions, the National University Lady Bulldogs, showed their dominance with a win against the De La Salle University Lady Spikers on Sunday, March 23.

The Lady Bulldogs are still undefeated on top of the standings with eight wins, while the De La Salle University Lady Spikers, the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses, and Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws are in a three-way tie with 5-3 win-loss records.

The Adamson University Lady Falcons, Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, and the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons are also in a three-way tie with 3-5 win-loss records, while the University of the East Lady Red Warriors are still winless at the bottom of the standings with eight losses.

Here are the other things you missed on the sixth weekend of the UAAP Volleyball Tournament.

Two-time UAAP MVP Bella Belen scored 23 points in the National University Lady Bulldogs’ 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18 win against the De La Salle University Lady Spikers on Sunday, March 23.

Bellan had 17 attack points, four block points, and two aces with 17 excellent receptions and seven excellent digs to lead her team to its eighth victory. Alyssa Solomon had 19 points on 17 attacks, while Vange Alinsug contributed 11 points. Shevana Laput scored 19 points in 16 attacks, two blocks, and an ace for the Lady Spikers, while Angel Canino added 15 points.

With the win, the Lady Bulldogs still sit on top of the standings with an 8-0 win-loss record, while the Lady Spikers are in a three-way tie with the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses and Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws with a 5-3 card.

Lady Bulldogs head coach Sherwin Meneses lauded his team’s composure despite multiple adjustments from the side of the Lady Spikers. He said, “Wala namang masyadong adjustments, talagang ‘yung composure lang talaga dapat laging nandyan. Down man kami, or tie, or lamang kami, dapat ‘yung composure laging nandiyan kasi wala nang madaling laro ngayon. Lahat talaga, nag-i-improve na ‘yung mga teams so ready lang kami kung ano ‘yung situation lagi na dumarating sa’min.”

The National University will try to continue its unbeaten run against the University of the Philippines on Wednesday, March 26, at 11 am at the Filoil EcoOil Centre. Meanwhile, the De La Salle University will try to get back to their winning ways against the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses on Saturday, March 29, at 5 pm at the Araneta Coliseum.

Faida Bakanke scored 22 points in the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws’ 25-22, 26-24, 17-25, 26-24 victory against the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses on Sunday, March 23.

Bakanke had 18 attack points, two blocks, and two aces, while Gerzel Petallo and Jazlyn Ellarina scored 12 points apiece. Regina Jurado led the Golden Tigresses with 20 points in 18 attacks, while Maribeth Hilongo and Angeline Poyos combined for 31 points.

Both the Lady Tamaraws and the Golden Tigresses, together with the De La Salle University Lady Spikers, are in a three-way tie with a 5-3 win-loss record.

Lady Tamaraws head coach Tina Salak revealed that she now has higher expectations of her girls now that the second round has started. She said, “Mataas ‘yung expectation ko talaga kasi binibigyan ko na sila ng bigger responsibility this second round. ‘Yung expectations din namin kasi masyado na ring mataas ‘yung at stake regarding sa positioning ng teams, so hopefully, magandang start ito for the second round and looking forward for more.”

The Far Eastern University will face the University of the East Lady Red Warriors on Wednesday, March 26, at 5 pm at the Filoil EcoOil Centre. Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas will try to get back to their winning ways against the De La Salle University Lady Spikers on Saturday, March 29, at 5 pm at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles needed two hours and 41 minutes to defeat the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 15-25, 25-23, 27-25, 30-32, 16-14, on Saturday, March 22.

Blue Eagles team captain Lyann de Guzman scored a game-high 25 points on 23 attacks, a block, and an ace, while Alexis Miner had 19 points. Zey Mitzi Pacia, Jihan Chuatico, and Yvana Sulit combined for 36 points.

In the side of the Fighting Maroons, Nina Ytang led the team with 24 points on 19 attacks, four blocks, and an ace, while Irah Jaboneta contributed 20 points. Joan Monares scored 18 points, while Kassandra Doering and Kianne Olango combined for 28 points.

The Blue Eagles and the Fighting Maroons are now tied in the standings with an identical 3-5 win-loss record, together with the Adamson University Lady Falcons.

Blue Eagles head coach Sergio Veloso commended his team since multiple players stepped up in the game. He said, “Today when you think about the teams, we don’t have one specific special player to play very, very long. Today, it’s special for our team because we played sometimes with mistakes, but the team never gave up. If I think about how special this is today, it’s because everybody played at a high level.”

The Ateneo de Manila University will face the Adamson University Lady Falcons on Saturday, March 29, at 1 pm at the Araneta Coliseum. Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines will try to get back to their winning ways against the National University Lady Bulldogs on Wednesday, March 26, at 11 am at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

The Adamson University Lady Falcons limited their errors to just 12 in their 25-20, 25-11, 25-21 victory against the University of the East Lady Red Warriors on Saturday, March 23.

Lady Falcons rookie captain Shaina Nitura led the team with 18 points in 17 attacks, while May Anne Nuique contributed 11 points. In the Lady Red Warriors, KC Cepada was the lone bright spot with 10 points, while Nessa Bangayan and Riza Nogales combined for 17 points.

With the win, the Lady Falcons rose in the standings with a 3-5 win-loss record, while the Lady Red Warriors are still winless at the bottom of the standings with eight losses.

After the game, Lady Falcons head coach JP Yude reminded his ward to just take it one game at a time. He said, “Sabi ko sa kanila, we’ll continue to motivate and encourage them. Kailangan ‘yung sa second round kasi, maraming bundok ‘yung kailangan iahon kasi mahirap na, e. Pero sabi ko nga sa kanila, we’ll take it one game at a time. Focus tayo sa kada kalaban para mapag-aralan nang maayos and kahit mahirap, walang imposible.”
