Alas Pilipinas shocked Vietnam, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19, in their opening day matchup in the 2025 SEA Men’s V.League in Candon, Philippines on July 9.
Leo Ordiales led Alas Pilipinas with 20 points, while Buds Buddin added 16 points in 12 attacks and four blocks. Jade Disquitado and Peng Taguibolos combined for 22 points in 10 attacks, four blocks, and two aces.
The team missed the services of Marck Espejo due to injury, Louie Ramirez due to college graduation, and Owa Retamar due to illness. Alas Pilipinas is currently on a three-game winning streak against Vietnam in the SEA Men’s V.League, dating back to both legs of the 2024 edition.
After the game, Ordiales expressed his happiness after the team showed a performance worthy of the home crowd. He said, “I’m very happy for my performance because I showed my talent to the people watching here.”
He added, “I’m happy for the win… We improved a lot, we improved on our defense, serve, blocking, and our communication.”
For Vietnam, Ngoc Thuan Nguyen led the team with 13 points in 11 attacks, a block, and an ace. Hiep Pham and Duy Tuyen Tran had seven points apiece.
Alas Pilipinas will face the undefeated champions Thailand on July 10 at 6pm, while Vietnam will take on Cambodia earlier that day.
Thailand Beats Indonesia
In the first match, defending champions Thailand overcame a slow start as they beat last year’s silver medalists Indonesia, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20.
Thungkaham Chaiwat led Thailand with 22 points in 20 attacks and two blocks, while team captain Amornthep Khonhan added 19 points in 16 attacks and three blocks, with seven excellent digs and three excellent receptions.
For Indonesia, Boy Arnez Arabi scored 13 points, while Farhan Hali contributed 12 points in 10 attacks and two blocks.
Thailand will face the Philippines on June 10 at 6:00 pm, while Indonesia will take on Cambodia on July 11 at 3:00 pm.
