Alas Pilipinas absorbed a straight-sets defeat to South Korea on Tuesday, falling 16-25, 18-25, 22-25 in the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup and dropping into a must-win situation in Pool A.
Facing a South Korean side that competed in the FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League less than a year ago, the Filipinas struggled to match their opponents’ size and experience through the first two sets before mounting a spirited challenge in the third.
Alas Pilipinas Loses Steam
The Philippines appeared poised to extend the match after building a 20-18 advantage behind a strong offensive push led by Alyssa Solomon and the rest of the attack.
However, South Korea responded when Kang Sowhi took over late, scoring four points during a decisive 6-0 run that turned a two-point deficit into a 24-20 lead.
Alas Pilipinas refused to go away quietly.
Ara Galang scored off the block before Niña Ytang came up with a rejection against Kang to save two match points and keep the hosts alive.
But Lee Juah delivered the finishing blow with a slide attack that sealed the victory for South Korea.
“Sayang pero maganda naman ’yung nakipagsabayan kami, nakadikit kami. Effort lang ’yung sa last point, ’yun nga sayang,” said Galang.
Alas Pilipinas in Must-Win Now Mode
The result dropped Alas Pilipinas to 2-2 in the standings and significantly complicated its semifinal hopes.
The Philippines must now defeat Chinese Taipei in its final Pool A match to keep its chances alive. Even with a victory, the Filipinas may still need favorable results elsewhere to advance to the knockout stage.
Thea Gagate paced the Philippines for the second consecutive match with 9 points built on 5 attacks, 3 blocks, and 1 ace.
Ytang added 8 points, while Solomon and team captain Alyssa Valdez contributed 7 markers apiece.
Despite the defeat, Alas Pilipinas showed flashes of the form that produced victories over Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, particularly in the third set when it challenged one of Asia’s traditional volleyball powers point-for-point.
South Korea improved to 3-0 in Pool A, drawing level with Chinese Taipei atop the standings.
Kang led all scorers with 19 points, while Lee Juah and Na Hyunsoo chipped in 12 points each.
Alas Pilipinas will now turn its attention to a crucial showdown against Chinese Taipei, with its semifinal aspirations hanging in the balance.
