Alex Eala is set to face Iva Jovic in the first round of the 2026 Roland Garros—the same player she previously teamed up with in doubles competition.
After competing in the doubles events of the ASB Classic and the Indian Wells Open, the two young stars will now meet on opposite sides of the court in the Main Draw of the year’s second Grand Slam.
Iva Jovic: A Younger but Multi-Titled Foe
Back in January, the tandem of Iva Jovic and Alex Eala reached the semifinals of the ASB Classic in New Zealand. Then in March, the two suffered a first-round exit at the Indian Wells Open.
These two young stars are certainly familiar with each other’s game. After playing in two tournaments together, it’s clear that neither player will be surprised by how the other moves on the court.
For those still unfamiliar with Jovic, the one thing that stands out right away is this: she’s a champion and true-blue rising star.
The 18-year-old has won two WTA singles championships, clinching the WTA 125 Ilkley trophy and the WTA 500 Guadalajara title, both last year. Jovic also reached the finals this year at the WTA 250 Hobart Open but lost in straight sets—something her opponent, Alex Eala, has yet to achieve in 2026.
On clay, the world No. 17 holds a record of 6 wins and 4 losses this season. Her best run came at the Charleston Open in April, where she reached the semifinals. Last year, the American teenager made her Roland Garros debut, beating Renata Zarazúa in the first round before bowing out to Elena Rybakina in the second.
Still Struggling in Clay
For Eala, the past few months on clay have been less than ideal. Her current singles record stands at 4 wins and 5 losses, with her most recent setback being a first-round exit at the Strasbourg Open.
Much like Iva Jovic, the pride of the Philippines only made her professional debut at the French Open last year, where she was dispatched by Emilia Arango in three sets.
Even so, the Rafa Nadal Academy alumna has proven time and again that she can surprise everyone and go deep in any tournament she plays. The 20-year-old continues to make fans believe that when the lights shine brightest, she can add more victories to her growing legacy.
